You’re three hours into a normal flight. The cabin lights are dim. You’ve already eaten one meal, watched half a movie, and looked at your watch twice. Your seatmate is asleep with their mouth slightly open.

You shift in your seat and do the math you don’t really want to do.

Three down. Seven to go. Maybe eight if there’s a headwind.

Now imagine fourteen to go.

Or eighteen.

Or twenty-two.

That’s the question Qantas is about to answer for the first time in commercial aviation history and on Tuesday, June 2, the airplane built to answer it left the ground in Toulouse for the first time.

Up at 35,000 feet, the question we’re asking is different from yours. We’re not asking how you will get through it. We’re asking how we will.

What just happened in Toulouse

On June 2, 2026, the first Airbus A350-1000ULR — the Ultra Long Range variant built specifically for Qantas — completed its maiden flight from Toulouse. Three hours and 43 minutes. Cruise at 41,000 feet over the Bay of Biscay. Two Airbus experimental test pilots and four flight-test engineers on board.

That sortie was the official beginning of an 80-hour flight-test programme that will run for about two months, focused almost entirely on one part of the airplane: the fuel system.

Because this isn’t a normal A350.

The A350-1000ULR carries a 20,000-litre extra rear-centre fuel tank that adds roughly 1,000 nautical miles of range over the standard -1000, giving the airplane a total range approaching 10,000 nautical miles. When it enters service, it will be the longest-range commercial airliner ever built surpassing the A350-900ULR that Singapore Airlines uses on the Singapore–New York run.

Qantas has ordered 12 of them. The first won’t be delivered until April 2027 (the original end-2026 timeline slipped due to supply chain issues). But the airplane that will fly Sydney to London Heathrow nonstop — 10,573 miles, the longest commercial route in history is now flying, and Qantas expects to launch commercial service in the first half of 2027.

For context: today’s longest commercial flight in the world is Singapore Airlines’ SQ23/SQ24 between Singapore Changi and Newark Liberty — roughly 9,537 miles, 18 to 19 hours in the air, flown by the A350-900ULR (the previous generation of the same family). That’s the route the industry already considers the edge of the operational envelope.

Project Sunrise adds roughly four more hours and another 1,000 miles on top of it.

That much you can read in the press release. Here’s the part the press release doesn’t tell you.

The airplane is the easy part of Project Sunrise. The humans are the hard part.

What 22 hours actually feels like up front

I’ve flown 8-hour transatlantic legs, 12-hour Asia–Europe legs, 14-hour Asia –US legs. I have never flown 22 hours nonstop, because no commercial pilot ever has. Even Singapore Airlines SQ23 — today’s longest commercial sector — tops out at 18 to 19 hours.

Project Sunrise is asking the industry to push that envelope by another four hours. Which, in flight-deck terms, is enormous.

Here’s why.

In the cockpit, the metabolic cost of flying isn’t the actual stick-and-rudder work — the autopilot does most of that. The metabolic cost is the constant vigilance. You’re monitoring six fuel tanks, four engine indicators, weather radar, traffic radar, ATC frequencies in three regions, oceanic crossing procedures, alternate airport availability over the next 1,500 miles, and the dozen subtle ways the airplane talks to you when something is starting to drift. You’re doing that at 41,000 feet in a 12% humidity, 800 mb pressure environment that is steadily dehydrating you, regardless of how much water the cabin crew brings up.

For 8 hours, this is manageable.

For 18, it requires choreographed sleep.

For 22, it requires choreographed everything.

The 5 things Project Sunrise had to solve before a single commercial passenger could board

The aircraft modification is one of five solvable problems. Here are the other four and how the system answers each one.

1. The range problem (solved by the engineers)

An A350-1000, off the showroom floor, cannot do Sydney to London nonstop. It’s roughly 800 nautical miles short, depending on payload and winds.

So Airbus took the most fuel-efficient widebody on the market and added a 20,000-litre rear-centre tank. The fuel system now has to manage a larger, more complex weight distribution which is why this week’s flight tests are 80 hours, two months, and focused almost entirely on the fuel system. The certification is not about whether the engines run. It’s about whether the new fuel architecture is safe in every fuel-loading scenario, including the one where you suddenly need to divert with 80% of your fuel still on board.

2. The duty-time problem (solved by the regulators)

The standard regulatory duty-time limit for two pilots is in the order of 13 to 14 hours from sign-on to engines off. A 22-hour flight, by definition, blows through that limit before you’re halfway across the Indian Ocean.

The fix is a 4-pilot crew. Two captains, two first officers effectively two complete cockpit teams. All four are in the cockpit for takeoff and landing — standard procedure at every ULR carrier, because the highest-workload phases of the flight deserve the highest level of human redundancy. The rotation happens during cruise: each pilot gets one long rest break (~4 hours) and one short break (~2.5 hours) in a dedicated crew bunk above the main cabin, choreographed so the pair flying the approach is the most rested one.

In real life: when you board a Project Sunrise flight, there are four pilots on your manifest, and all four are up front when you push back from the gate. The system is older than you think — Singapore, Qantas, Emirates, and Cathay have been running variants of this for over 20 years on slightly shorter ULR routes.

3. The biology problem (managed by science, not engineering)

The human circadian rhythm does not know what year it is, what time zone you crossed, or what your boarding pass says. It runs on a roughly 24-hour clock anchored to light.

On a 22-hour flight, you will cross every time zone on Earth. Your body will not know what time it is, even after you land. This isn’t a passenger problem — it’s a pilot problem, because the pilots flying your approach are the same pilots whose circadian rhythm has been shoved through a blender.

This is why Qantas has spent years on circadian research. The cabin lighting is engineered to push passengers (and crew) onto destination time within the first few hours. Meals are timed deliberately. The pilots’ rest cycles are choreographed against their personal sleep timing, not just the clock.

4. The “fresh for the approach” problem (the hardest one)

This is the one keeping the safety analysts up at night.

The approach and landing phase of any flight is the most safety-critical part. It’s also, in a normal flight, the part the pilots are freshest for, because they’re at the start of their duty period.

On a 22-hour flight, the approach happens at the end of the duty period. The pilots flying you into Heathrow have, in theory, been awake or rested-poorly for most of the last day. The system mitigates this — the pilots who land the airplane take the long mid-flight rest break specifically so they’re as fresh as possible for descent — but it cannot eliminate the basic biological cost of being on duty for 22 straight hours.

5. The unknown-unknowns problem (still being tested right now)

This is what the next 80 flight-test hours are for.

Every ultra-long-range aircraft brings a category of failure modes that didn’t exist on shorter flights: fuel pump behavior during a 22-hour cycle, hydraulic system aging on a single sortie, crew rest area performance over long durations, cabin pressurization stability over 22-hour cycles, even avionics cooling behavior when the systems have been running uninterrupted for a day.

None of these are likely to fail. All of them have to be proven.

The framework above is the system. But the most useful thing for a passenger isn’t understanding the engineering — it’s understanding what your actual experience will be in three real scenarios most ULR passengers worry about.

1. The Weather — But Not the Way You Think

Most passengers check the weather at their destination. Will it rain? Do I need a jacket?

I check three things:

• Departure airport weather (wind, visibility, thunderstorms nearby)

• Destination weather (same, plus the forecast for my arrival window)

• Anything big happening between the two (a line of storms over the Midwest, for example)

Why? Because weather doesn’t just affect takeoff and landing. It shapes the route. A line of thunderstorms over Kentucky might mean a smoother or bumpier ride depending on how we go around it.

You don’t need to be a meteorologist. I use the same free app most pilots glance at: Windy.com. Zoom out. Look at the big picture between your two cities. If you see a big red blob, expect some deviations. That’s not scary, that’s your crew doing their job.

2. The Aircraft Type — and My Boarding Strategy

This one takes 10 seconds on the airline app and completely changes how I play the boarding game.

But the right wait time depends entirely on what aircraft you’re on. Here’s how I adjust:

Widebody (777, A350, 787, A380): Boarding 250-400 people takes a while. I wait. Sometimes 20-25 minutes after boarding starts. I want to be one of the last 15% on the plane. Overhead bin space is not a concern — there’s plenty. My carry-on will find a home near my seat. What I’m avoiding is 30 extra minutes of sitting in a metal tube while the rest of the cabin files in past my knees.

Narrow-body mainline (737, A320, 757): My sweet spot. 10-15 minutes after general boarding begins. The initial jam has cleared, most bins are still open, and I can walk straight to my row without the stop-and-go shuffle.

Regional jet (CRJ, E175, Embraer 145): Here’s where my strategy flips. On a small regional jet, overhead space is brutally limited — those bins barely fit a backpack, let alone a 22-inch roller. Board too late and you’ll be forced to gate-check your bag, then wait on the jet bridge at your destination to reclaim it.

So on a regional jet, if I’m traveling with a carry-on I actually need? I board earlier. Not in the first wave, never in the first wave but I don’t push my luck either. 5-7 minutes after boarding starts is my move. Enough to let the jam clear, early enough to protect my bag.

The quick rule: Big plane = wait longer, protect your sanity. Small plane with a carry-on = board earlier, protect your bag.

3. My Seat Position

The line doesn’t look that bad… until it stops moving.

The shutdown just ended. TSA officers are getting paid again.

So most travelers assume things are back to normal.

They’re not.

And that’s where people are getting caught.

Officers who quit don’t come back overnight. Lines at the worst airports won’t normalize for 4 to 6 weeks. Spring break is still in full swing.

And most travelers are still walking in completely unprepared.

How Long Will the Lines Still Be?

Don’t let the deal fool you. While TSA officers receiving paychecks will reduce callouts within days, security lines will improve gradually. Major hubs like Atlanta may not see real improvement until late April.

Nearly 500 officers quit. Training a replacement takes 4 to 6 months. That math doesn’t fix itself this weekend.

The airports still most at risk: ATL, IAH, JFK, LGA, EWR, ORD, BOS, LAS, IAD. Many stopped publishing live wait data — treat any “no data” airport as elevated until further notice.

The airports running surprisingly well right now: DFW, DCA, DTW, CLT, SLC, LAX, BWI — under 15 minutes at most checkpoints.

Same country. Completely different trips.

I fly on long-haul routes between continents the kind of flights that cross oceans and, until a few weeks ago, crossed the Middle East. Before every flight, I sign a document called the Operational Flight Plan. It tells me how much fuel we’re carrying, how much that fuel weighs, what it costs, and what route we’re taking. It’s the first thing I look at and the last thing I think about before I push back from the gate.

I’m telling you this because right now, those flight plans look nothing like they did a month ago. The routes are longer. The fuel loads are heavier. And the cost column the number my airline is paying to put kerosene in my tanks has roughly doubled.

A few weeks ago, jet fuel cost airlines about $60 to $80 a barrel.

Today it’s somewhere above $100+. Brent crude (that’s the global benchmark for oil — think of it as the price tag the whole world watches).

The Strait is still effectively shut, and until tankers are actually sailing through it again, fuel prices will keep swinging in ways I’ve never seen in my career.

What does this mean for the price of your next plane ticket?

Everything. And nothing if you know how to play it.

This article is the guide I’d give a friend sitting next to me in the cockpit. No jargon, no finance-speak just what’s actually happening to fuel, why it matters for your wallet, and exactly how to find the best deal in the middle of it.

First, Let Me Explain How Fuel Affects Your Ticket Price

If you’re not in aviation, you might not realize how central fuel is to the cost of flying you from A to B. Let me put it simply: fuel is to an airline what ingredients are to a restaurant. It’s typically the second-biggest expense after paying the pilots, flight attendants, and ground staff — somewhere between 20% and 30% of what it costs to operate a flight. When fuel doubles in price, it’s like a restaurant seeing the cost of every dish on its menu suddenly spike. The restaurant has to raise prices, shrink portions, or lose money on every plate. Airlines face the exact same choice.

Right now, three things are hitting the industry at the same time, and all of them push your ticket price up.

The Strait of Hormuz Is Closed and That Matters More Than You Think

Let me paint the picture. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway just 21 miles wide at its tightest point between Iran and Oman. About 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through it every day on tanker ships. Think of it as a single-lane bridge that a fifth of the planet’s energy has to cross.

On March 2, Iran’s military declared it closed. They threatened to attack any ship that tried to pass through. And they’ve followed through at least five tankers have been hit, crew members have been killed, and roughly 200 commercial tankers are now anchored outside the Strait, engines off, waiting. The only ships getting through are a handful flying Iranian or Chinese flags.

This has sent fuel prices to genuine record highs. According to S&P Global’s Platts (the industry’s most trusted pricing service), jet fuel has spiked harder than gasoline, diesel, or crude oil — surpassing even the peaks we saw after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The last time jet fuel was anywhere near this expensive, I remember our dispatchers sending us messages mid-flight asking us to slow down to save fuel. We’re back in that territory.

Here’s a detail that most people outside the industry don’t know: roughly half of Europe’s jet fuel imports come from the Middle East. European refineries have been closing in recent years, so the continent has become increasingly dependent on Gulf supply for the actual kerosene that goes into airplane tanks. That supply is now cut off. And there’s no quick substitute other regions of the world are scrambling to protect their own fuel supplies, so Europe can’t just buy its way out of this shortage from somewhere else.

How to get in, get out, find the best deals, and avoid the worst disruptions

🟠 UPDATE — May 9, 2026

I’m writing this from home on my days off, watching Flightradar24 paint a picture that looks dramatically different from the one I described in March.

The hole in the sky over the Gulf is starting to close. Not all the way. Not evenly. But for the first time in 70 days, I can point to specific airports, specific routes, and specific carriers and say: yes, that’s flying again.

If you’ve been holding off on travel through the region, this is the article that tells you what’s real and what’s still wishful thinking. I’m writing it the way I’d brief a friend in the jumpseat — what’s open, what’s not, where the deals are, and where the traps are still hiding.

What Changed: The 70-Day Reset

Three things shifted the picture this past month.

A US–Iran ceasefire is holding. Announced April 8 and extended at Pakistan’s request, it’s far from a peace deal — Israel and Iran are still trading accusations of violations, and the agreement specifically excludes Lebanon. But it’s enough that civil aviation authorities have started releasing pressure.

UAE airspace fully reopened on May 4–5. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority lifted all temporary precautionary measures and declared operations at “normal status.” Dubai and Abu Dhabi are scaling up week by week.

Qatar’s airspace partially reopened, and Qatar Airways is rebuilding fast. From 15 daily flights in early March to roughly 140 daily departures now, serving 120+ destinations through QCAA-approved corridors.

The bad news: the Strait of Hormuz is still a war zone for shipping, jet fuel costs are elevated, EASA still says avoid the central corridor, and most Western carriers haven’t restarted. The recovery is real, but it’s uneven.

The Four Hubs: Where They Actually Stand Today

✈️ Dubai (DXB / DWC) — Open, scaling fast

Emirates is ramping aggressively now that airspace restrictions are gone. Flydubai is following. If you’re flying Emirates direct, you’re in the strongest position you’ve been in since February.

The catch is European and North American carrier coverage. Lufthansa Group is suspended through May 31. Eurowings is out through October 24. British Airways through May 31. KLM through May 17. Cathay Pacific through May 31. Air Canada through April 30 — watch for renewal.

✈️ Abu Dhabi (AUH) — Open, but BA is gone

Etihad is rebuilding from roughly 50% capacity. Abu Dhabi airspace is fully reopened along with the rest of the UAE. The big gap: British Airways pulled out of Abu Dhabi entirely through end of 2026. They are not coming back this year.

✈️ Doha (DOH) — The biggest comeback story

This is the one that surprised me. Qatar Airways is now operating around 140 daily departures from Doha to 120+ destinations. Iraq routes — Baghdad, Basra, Erbil — resume tomorrow, May 10. Air India, IndiGo, and Gulf Air came back to Doha on May 1. SriLankan returns May 11. Pegasus May 12. The full summer schedule launches June 16, targeting 150+ destinations.

The constraints: all flights operate through specific QCAA-approved corridors, so flight times are 45–90 minutes longer than normal on many routes. The Qatar Airways A380 fleet is grounded through May with a phased return planned for June 16. Some long-haul routes — Boston, Brisbane, Auckland, San Francisco, London Gatwick — are still suspended through mid-June.

✈️ Bahrain (BAH) — Reopening, slowly

Bahrain is back on the Qatar Airways schedule from May 1. Gulf Air is gradually resuming operations, though traffic is still through fixed entry/exit points rather than free-flowing. Most of Gulf Air’s network has shifted back from its temporary Dammam base.

That’s the headline picture. The four hubs above are what most travelers need to know to make a basic go/no-go decision in the next 30 days.

If you’re anywhere in the path of this storm, you’ve probably noticed the grocery store shelves looking bare and the weather apps looking ominous.

Winter Storm Fern is already the biggest aviation disruption since COVID began. And for much of the country, the worst is still ahead.

Here’s where we stand as of Saturday evening:

• 12,000+ flights already cancelled for the weekend

• Sunday is on track for 8,200+ cancellations — the most for a single day since March 2020

• Over 180 million Americans under winter storm warnings

• 18 states have declared states of emergency

The storm has already hammered the South — Dallas-Fort Worth alone saw 1,300 cancellations, with Nashville, Charlotte, and Atlanta not far behind. Now it’s moving toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where major hubs are bracing for impact. LaGuardia has already cancelled 85% of Sunday flights. Reagan National hit 90%. Newark is at 50%.

This storm spans 2,300 miles — from New Mexico to Maine. Some areas could see up to 25 inches of snow. Others are facing catastrophic ice accumulation that forecasters say could rival hurricane damage.

Here’s what I want you to understand from the flight deck:

Why all these cancellations are actually good news

Airlines don’t cancel flights because they’re being overly cautious. They cancel because the math doesn’t work any other way.

Think about what happens when a flight doesn’t get cancelled proactively:

Your plane pushes back from the gate. It sits on the taxiway for two hours waiting for de-icing. The crew “times out” — their legally mandated rest requirements kick in, and they can no longer fly. Now you’re deplaning back at the terminal at 11 PM with no crew, no hotel voucher (weather isn’t the airline’s fault, so they don’t owe you one), and no options until maybe tomorrow. Maybe the day after.

Meanwhile, that aircraft was supposed to fly three more legs today. Those passengers are now stranded too. The crew that was supposed to pick up the plane in Chicago? They’re stuck. The downstream effects cascade for days.

This is exactly what happened to Southwest during the 2022 holiday meltdown. They tried to operate through bad weather, their systems collapsed, and it took them nearly two weeks to fully recover. The DOT eventually fined them $140 million.

The system learning from its mistakes

When you see “proactive cancellations” announced 24-48 hours before a storm hits, that’s the system working. It’s not ideal for passengers, but it’s the difference between:

Option A: Your flight is cancelled today, you rebook for Tuesday, you’re inconvenienced but functional.

Option B: You get stuck mid-journey with no crew, no plane, no hotel, and every rebooking option is also oversold because the airline tried to operate flights it couldn’t complete.

I’ll take Option A every time.

What actually happens at the airport during a storm

Here’s what most passengers never see:

De-icing operations become the bottleneck. De-icing fluid is a finite resource. The trucks can only service so many aircraft per hour. When it’s actively snowing, the “holdover time” — how long the fluid remains effective — shrinks dramatically. A plane might need to be de-iced twice before takeoff. In severe conditions, three times.

Runway capacity drops. Airports that normally launch 60 departures per hour might drop to 30. Or 15. Or zero, if visibility goes below minimums.

Ground stops cascade. When the FAA issues a ground stop for a major hub, every flight headed there gets held at the gate. If your connecting airport is locked down, you’re not going anywhere either.

Crew legality becomes critical. Pilots and flight attendants have strict limits on duty time. If weather delays push crews past those limits, the flight doesn’t go — even if the weather improves. There’s no “just this once” exception. These rules exist because fatigued crews make mistakes.

If you’re supposed to fly Sunday or Monday

Every major airline has issued travel waivers — Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, all of them. This means you can change your flight without fees or fare differences.

A few things most people don’t realize:

1. You can often rebook yourself through the airline’s app before the cancellation officially hits. Don’t wait for them to cancel, get ahead of it tonight.

2. Weather-related cancellations don’t entitle you to hotels or meals. The airline’s guarantees typically only apply to delays they caused (mechanical issues, crew scheduling errors, etc.). Weather is considered outside their control.

3. Your credit card might help. Many travel credit cards include trip delay insurance that covers hotels and meals when you’re stranded. Check your benefits, you may have coverage you didn’t know about.

   

What to expect after the storm

Even after the snow stops, expect residual delays for 24-48 hours.

Here’s why: Airlines need to reposition aircraft and crews. That plane that was supposed to be in Boston is stuck in Dallas. The crew that was supposed to fly it is somewhere else entirely. It takes careful choreography to get everything back in position.

Airports also need to complete snow removal, de-icing equipment maintenance, and runway inspections before returning to full capacity.

The bottom line

I’ve been flying for 27+ years. I’ve operated through countless storms, diversions, and weather delays. And I can tell you: the most dangerous thing an airline can do is pretend the weather isn’t a factor.

Those 12,000 cancelled flights represent a system choosing safety over schedule pressure. It represents airlines learning from past disasters. It represents thousands of pilots, dispatchers, and operations controllers making the conservative call.

If your flight gets cancelled, I know it’s frustrating. But I’d rather you be frustrated and safe than airborne and at risk.

1) Check your flight early and often
Use your airline app.
Really. Things are changing by the hour.

2) Give yourself time
Even if your flight makes it, delays are likely.
At Newark, 3-hour ground delays are already happening.
Connections? Try to give yourself 2–3 hours. Anything tighter is a gamble.

3) Have a backup idea
With capacity cut, rebooking could take a while.
If the trip is critical, consider grabbing a refundable backup ticket. Expensive, yes. Cheaper than sleeping on an airport floor.

4) Know your rights
If your flight is canceled or delayed 3+ hours (6+ international), you can get a refund or rebooking.
Be kind to gate agents, none of this is their fault but advocate for yourself.

5) Airline Policies
Here’s what the major carriers are offering right now:

• United: Full refunds available even if your flight wasn’t canceled, including basic economy tickets

• American: 220 flights per day canceled through Monday; no-penalty changes or refunds available

• Delta: 170 Friday cancellations; waiving fare differences for rebooking, refunds upon request

• JetBlue: Automatic rebooking, full refunds if you choose not to travel

• Frontier: Change and cancellation fees waived (but you pay fare difference for rebooking)

Pilots still have full ATC support. Controllers are still on the job.

🔭 Looking Ahead

Here’s something important to understand: even if your local airport isn’t on that list of 40, you’re probably still affected. Nearly 70% of domestic flights either depart from or arrive at one of these airports. The ripple effects are nationwide.

The reality is this situation could extend through the holiday season if the shutdown continues. Thanksgiving is three weeks away, and that’s what has everyone in the industry worried. I know what you’re thinking: why not just take an Ambien and knock yourself out for eight hours? Because it’s almost certainly a bad idea.

Most sleeping pills last about eight hours, which means you might be very groggy when you land. If your flight is 10 hours or less, there’s a good chance you’ll still be feeling the effects while trying to get through customs and navigate an unfamiliar airport in a foreign city.

Over-the-counter sleep aids? Same problem. Most are sedating antihistamines that stay in your system for at least eight hours.

And here’s the kicker: some people can have bad reactions to sleep medications including sleepwalking or restlessness. Imagine discovering you’re one of those people while trapped at 35,000 feet.

If you absolutely must take something, talk to your doctor first and test it at home before your trip. Never try any sleep aid for the first time on a plane.

The exception? Melatonin can be helpful, but timing matters. Taking a low dose of melatonin (0.5 to 3 milligrams) a couple hours before bed may help shift your circadian rhythms but save it for after you arrive, not during the flight.

On-time performance is dramatically higher. Recent analysis of DOT data shows first-flight-of-the-day departures have 80-90% on-time rates versus 60-70% for afternoon flights. In fact, during the worst summer months, the earliest morning flights are 30% more likely to depart on time compared to evening flights.

The Scam in Action

Picture this: Nicholas Meyer paid extra for window seats on a series of flights this past weekend from New York to Orange County, California, with a layover in Atlanta. The first leg went fine, he got his window and enjoyed the view. But when he boarded his connecting flight, a Boeing 757-200, he discovered his "window seat" was actually next to... nothing. Just a blank wall where a window should be.

"Plaintiff had no option but to spend the ensuing four-and-a-half hour flight next to a blank wall," the lawsuit states. Now Meyer is suing Delta Air Lines in federal court in New York.

The United case is even more egregious. Aviva Copaken of Los Angeles paid between $45.99 and $169.99 for window seats on three separate United flights departing from LAX this spring. Not a single one had an actual window. Fellow plaintiff Marc Brenman of San Francisco used points and benefits to pay for what turned out to be a windowless seat on a United flight from San Francisco to D.C.

Both lawsuits were filed this Tuesday and claim the airlines have sold more than one million fake window seats. After complaining, Copaken got refunds for two of her three bogus window seat fees, and Brenman received a partial refund but only after the fact.

The Money Grab

Here's the infuriating part: These airlines know exactly which seats are windowless. The fees aren't small either:

• Delta: $70+ extra for window seat upgrades

• United: $50+ domestic, up to $100 international

These seats are typically next to walls because of air conditioning ducts or electrical components, primarily on Boeing 737s, 757s, and Airbus A321s. Other airlines like American and Alaska operate the same aircraft but actually disclosewhen a window seat lacks a window.

The attorneys estimate millions of passengers have been affected. At $50+ per fake window seat, we're looking at hundreds of millions in overcharges.

Your Defense Strategy: Don't Get Fooled

The good news? You can completely avoid this scam with a few simple steps:

Before You Book

1. Always check SeatGuru.com first

• Search by airline and specific aircraft type

• Look for seats marked "No window" or "Misaligned window"

• Red-coded seats have significant problems

2. Avoid these danger zones:

• First and last few rows of each cabin section

• Seats near galleys and lavatories

3. Target the safe zone:
