Somewhere in your family group chat, this is probably happening already. Someone finds a flight that gets everyone there in time, the rest of the family books the same one, and the 7:05 on Thanksgiving morning sits there half empty for a lot less money.

I’d take the 7:05. I’d take Christmas morning over the 23rd, and I’d fly home on New Year’s Day before I’d go anywhere near the Sunday after. I’ve spent 28 years and more than 12,000 hours up front, a fair share of them on holidays, and the days most people avoid are some of the easiest flying of the year. This is the holiday follow-up to The Flight Times Everyone Hates and Why Pilots Secretly Love Them, and the reasoning is much the same: a quiet day is quiet for the airplane and the crew as well as for you.

Everyone flies on the same handful of days

The busiest day ever recorded at US airport checkpoints was the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year. The TSA screened 3,133,924 people on November 30, 2025, nearly all of them trying to get home before work on Monday.

Christmas followed the same pattern. On Sunday, December 28, 2025, nearly 2.92 million people went through security. Three days earlier, on Christmas Day, it was about 2.07 million, so roughly 850,000 fewer people at the airports.

New Year’s Eve is close behind. In TSA data from 2021 through 2025, it’s the quietest day of the season that isn’t a holiday itself, quieter on average than Christmas Eve.

The fares follow the crowds. Going, the flight-deal site, looked at 2025 holiday prices and found that flying on the holiday itself saved about 15 to 30 percent. Thanksgiving Day was the cheapest day to fly out of three of the five US regions it studied, and Christmas Day was the cheapest out of the Midwest and the Northeast.

If you’re a nervous flyer, a packed Sunday is every bit as safe as a quiet Christmas morning. The rules and the safety margins are the same whatever the crowd. What changes is your chance of leaving on time and arriving the same day, and that’s where the quiet days win.

What a quiet day looks like from up front

From the gate, a holiday morning means a short security line and plenty of empty seats. From the cockpit I’m looking at different things: how much room there is in the sky, how long the line is at the de-icing pad, and whether the crew has been chasing delays since dawn.

Start with the sky. When weather cuts the number of airplanes a big airport can land in an hour, the FAA holds flights on the ground at their departure airports. It calls these ground delay programs, or ground stops when it halts departures altogether. Your airplane is fine and your crew is ready, and you sit at the gate anyway because Newark can only take so many arrivals in a snow shower at 5 PM. On a holiday, with fewer flights on the schedule, the same weather backs up fewer airplanes, so those programs are rarer and shorter. Your phone’s forecast won’t show you any of this, which is why I wrote Your Weather App Is Lying to You About Your Flight.

Then there’s the de-icing pad, which matters from late November on and is the part of winter flying I’d most like passengers to understand. When snow or freezing drizzle is falling, the airplane usually gets two sprays. The first is hot fluid, usually orange-tinted, that cleans the snow and ice off. The second is thicker, usually green, and it coats the wings so new snow melts into it instead of sticking to the metal. That coat only works for so long. We call the limit the holdover time, and it depends on the temperature, the type of precipitation and how hard it’s coming down. In steady snow it can be well under half an hour, counted from the moment the green coat goes on.

If we’re still waiting in line for the runway when that time runs out, we normally go back, get sprayed again and rejoin the line. On a peak day, with a long queue between the pad and the runway, that loop is how a 20-minute delay becomes two hours. On Christmas morning we get sprayed, taxi almost straight to the runway, and take off with the fluid still doing its job.

If you’re watching from a window seat, the green on the wing is that protective coat. Orange on its own is normal too, because on a cold, dry morning with nothing falling, cleaning is all the airplane needs. The faint sweet smell that sometimes reaches the cabin is the fluid. It isn’t harmful at those levels, and we usually shut off the outside air while the truck is spraying to keep most of it out. Last, the crew. Every pilot and flight attendant has a legal limit on how long they can be on duty. On a peak day, small delays get passed from one flight to the next, and by evening some crews run into that limit. When a crew times out, the flight can’t leave with them, and if the airline can’t find a fresh crew, it cancels. Airlines keep reserve crews and a few spare airplanes for exactly this, but on the busiest days they’re stretched thin by evening. On the holiday itself there’s usually more slack, and a small problem gets solved with a phone call.

Who works a holiday comes down to seniority. Some senior crew bid those trips for the holiday pay many contracts offer, and plenty of junior crew are there because they couldn’t hold the day off. Some of them would rather be home for dinner, but on a quiet holiday no one on the crew is running behind, and you can feel that in the cabin. Many pilots’ families fly standby too, and on a holiday morning there’s often a seat for them, which is one more reason pilots like these days.

The three days I’d book

On Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, I’d take the first departure of the day, ideally before 8 AM, and I’d pay a little more for a nonstop, because on a holiday morning the connection is the likeliest thing to go wrong. That first airplane spent the night at your airport, the crew starts fresh, and there’s no earlier flight that can make it late. Most short and mid-length trips put you down before noon, well ahead of the turkey. On a frosty morning the whole first wave needs the frost sprayed off, so there can be a wait on the pad, but with nothing falling the cleaning fluid is usually enough and there’s no short holdover clock running. Book your ride to the airport the night before, too. Buses run holiday schedules, and rideshares can be thin before 6 AM.

Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, is one of the quietest days of the season at the airports, and last year it was the cheapest day to fly out of the Midwest and the Northeast. Morning flights get you there for lunch, and evening flights are often lighter still. Look at the seat map before you pay for extra space, because your odds of an empty seat next to you are usually better than on the busy days around it. If you’re choosing a seat anyway, this is how I pick mine.

New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, is the quietest ordinary day of the season. Fly during the day, land by early evening, and you’ll still have time to change for the party. Coming home, New Year’s Day is usually much lighter than Sunday, January 3, when most of the country heads back to work, and Saturday the 2nd is usually somewhat lighter.

Five more hints for the next two months

1. If you missed the fare sweet spot, look at the quiet days. Last October I wrote that Google Flights data puts the best Thanksgiving fares about 35 days out (the 35-day rule). This year that was last Thursday, October 22. Fares on the busy days usually climb from here, but last year Thanksgiving Day itself was the cheapest day to fly out of three of five US regions, so set a fare alert for Thursday morning before you give up on the trip.

2. Keep an eye on December 11 when you book Christmas. Congress has funded the government until then, two weeks before Christmas. If the money runs out, air traffic controllers keep working, unpaid. Last year the FAA’s flight cuts at 40 airports only came more than five weeks into the shutdown, as staffing thinned, to protect the safety margins, and I explained at the time in The Shutdown Didn’t Make Flying Dangerous. Nobody knows yet whether Congress will extend that date, so for Christmas I’d buy a fare I can change without a fee. On the big US airlines that usually means anything above basic economy, and you’d pay only the fare difference.

3. Read the fare rules before you buy. The cheapest holiday fares are often basic economy, with no seat choice and, on some airlines, no full-size carry-on. Families should check the airline’s family-seating policy first, because several US airlines now seat young kids next to a parent for free even on basic fares (the age cutoff varies). The next fare up is still often worth it for the carry-on alone. A checked bag that misses a connection on a peak day can take days to find you.

4. Install the airline’s app before you leave home. When a flight cancels, it usually offers you a new seat before the gate agent can get to you. And if the airline cancels your flight or delays it three hours or more on a domestic trip (six on an international one), and you’d rather not travel at all, US rules now give you a cash refund instead of a voucher, as long as you don’t accept the rebooking or the voucher first.

5. Leave the presents unwrapped. The TSA may need to open a wrapped gift, so use gift bags or ship them ahead. Wine and snow globes bigger than a tennis ball go in a checked bag. The pie can come in your carry-on, though gravy and cranberry sauce over 3.4 ounces can’t.

If someone in your family is still booking, send them those five.

Most people guess my no-fly day is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, since it holds the record and it’s a hard day, but it isn’t my answer.

There’s one window, a few hours long, that I won’t book for my own family at any fare. People choose it because it feels sensible, and from the cockpit it’s when everything I’ve described goes wrong at once.

Over the past week, Houthi missiles and drones have hit several Saudi airports. Riyadh’s King Khalid International took the worst of it. At least 19 people have died, among them a Saudia captain and a flynas flight attendant who were simply at work, doing the job my colleagues and I do every day. My thoughts are with their families and their crews.

Here’s where things stand today

• Riyadh is closed until at least the end of Saturday, October 17, and that date can move. Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah are open but running heavy delays and cancellations. Dubai and Doha are open and operating. European regulators have told airlines to avoid parts of Saudi airspace and use caution over the rest.

• The FAA has also issued a caution notice for American airlines flying over Saudi Arabia, in force until December 10.

• If you’re flying between Europe and Asia, this matters even if you never land in the region. Since March, a large share of those flights have crossed Saudi Arabia, and its airports sit on the captain’s list of places we could divert to if we needed to land quickly. With Riyadh shut and warnings in place, airline planners are routing around the risk. Some flights take longer tracks, some go north through Central Asia, and some add a fuel stop. If your flight is scheduled longer than it was last month, that’s usually why, and that extra time is margin they’ve chosen to pay for.

• If you’re booked through the region before October 20, check with your airline now and avoid tight connections at the far end.

Two families walk into the same terminal for the same flight.

The first arrives three hours early — checked in already, passports backed up on paper, kids fed a real breakfast at the gate. The second cuts it to ninety minutes, hits a longer-than-expected line, and jogs the last hundred yards while a gate agent gives them the look.

Same airplane. Same departure time. One family starts vacation relaxed. The other starts it with an elevated heart rate.

The difference isn’t luck. It’s a handful of decisions made days before anyone reached the airport. After thirty years and 10,000-plus hours up front, here’s what I wish every passenger knew before flying this summer.

✈️ Before you book

Fly early. Your airplane has to physically exist at your airport before it can take you anywhere — a 6:15 a.m. departure usually slept at the gate overnight, clean of yesterday’s delays. Every flight after that first wave inherits the problems of the one before it.

• The numbers back it up. Flights between 6 and 9 a.m. run on-time roughly 82-84%. Anything after 7 p.m. drops to the high 50s-low 60s. (Full hour-by-hour breakdown here.)

• Summer raises the stakes. Afternoon thunderstorms build almost on schedule — a morning departure beats the storm to the runway.

• Nonstop ≠ smartest. On a storm-prone route (Florida to the Northeast, say), one canceled nonstop leaves you with nothing. A connection through a busy hub gives you a backup flight.

• Pick your day. Tuesday and Wednesday run noticeably less congested than Friday or Sunday.

• Pick your date. The real crunch isn’t July 4th itself — it’s the Thursday/Friday before, the Sunday after, and the first two weeks of August. Push to late August and everything eases up together.

• Pad your connection. Treat the posted minimum connect time as a legal floor, not reality — add 30-45 minutes this summer.

• Flying late? Have a backup. Pick a flight with another same-day departure behind it on your route — that’s your rebooking safety net.

• The wing-seat thing is real physics, not folklore. An airplane pivots around its center of lift, roughly at the wing — like a seesaw. Sit up front or in back and you ride the far end of the seesaw; sit near the wing and you’re closest to the pivot. (More on my go-to seat here.) “Safer seating,” though, is mostly fiction — survivability isn’t meaningfully seat-dependent on modern aircraft. More here 👇🏻

🎒 Packing like a pilot

I’ve lived out of a carry-on for two decades. Three rules run the whole system: redundancy without bulk, multi-functionality, and accessibility. (The full system is here.)

• The 5-4-3-2-1 capsule — five underwear/sock sets, four shirts, three bottoms, two layers, one jacket, all wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying fabric — covers up to ten days.

• Bag matters: a soft-shell spinner flexes into tight overhead bins better than a hard case.

• Check a bag? Still pack one outfit and your toiletries in the carry-on — cheap insurance against a bag that misses your connection.

• AirTag every checked bag. Turns “somewhere in the system” into “in a specific building in Charlotte” — far more useful to tell an agent.

• Power banks: carry-on only, never checked. It’s a safety regulation, and several airlines now restrict in-cabin use too.

• Passport: never in a seatback pocket. More get left there than almost anywhere else on the plane.

• Slip-ons + easy-access liquids — standard 3-1-1 rules (3.4 oz, one quart bag) still apply at most checkpoints.

• Bag fees jumped hard this spring, and a couple of carriers now charge Basic Economy more than standard fare for a first bag. Prepay online for a small discount, and check whether a travel card you already carry includes a free checked bag.

Summer flying is crowded, tight, and easy to get wrong this year. So here’s the short version — 28 years at the front of the airplane, distilled into the things I’d actually tell you at the gate.

A smooth trip isn’t luck. It’s set up on the ground, before you leave. Here’s how.

1. Take the first flight of the day. Delays compound as the day goes on — your evening flight is hostage to every problem the airplane had since breakfast. Mornings get cancelled less and fly through the smoothest air. Best single choice you can make.

2. Go nonstop or leave real room. A nonstop can’t misconnect. If you must connect, give yourself 90+ minutes at a big hub in summer. The $40 you save on a tight layover is a loan, and the interest is your vacation.

3. Book in the window. Roughly 1–3 months out for domestic, 2–8 for international. Fly early in the week — it’s usually cheaper than weekends. Set a fare alert and let the price come to you instead of refreshing tabs at midnight.

4. Pick your seat on purpose. Over the wing if turbulence rattles you — it’s the steadiest part of the airplane. Aisle, forward of the wing, if you want a fast exit and first crack at rebooking. Skip the very back; it moves the most.

5. Skip the lines before you reach them. If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or CLEAR, this is the summer to get them. And whatever you do — arrive earlier than feels necessary. Rushing is rocket fuel for stress, and summer security is slow. The shortcut most passengers walk right past:

6. Pack light and stay powered. Carry-on only means you never wait at a belt and never lose a bag. Bring a charged battery pack every delay drains your phone exactly when you need it. Screenshot your boarding pass in case the terminal Wi-Fi quits. Ten days, one carry-on — here's exactly how I do it:

7. Track the airplane, not just the flight. Turn on your airline app's push notifications — you'll often know about a delay or gate change before the agent announces it, and the first person to act gets the good seat on the next flight. The pro move: open Flightradar24 and find your inbound aircraft, the plane that becomes your flight. If it hasn't left its last city yet, your "on time" departure isn't. Apps like Flighty go further, predicting delays and flagging aircraft swaps before the airline says a word.

8. Nervous flyer? Tell the crew. We’re trained for it and genuinely glad to help. Then: slow your exhale longer than your inhale, keep your eyes on the horizon, and skip the second coffee — caffeine mimics the exact racing-heart feeling your brain reads as fear. The bumps are uncomfortable, not dangerous.

9. Can’t-miss trip? Fly in the day before. A wedding, a cruise, a flight you absolutely cannot miss is not a same-day-arrival trip in summer. The extra hotel night is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy.

That’s the whole list. Do the unglamorous work on the ground, and the flight becomes what it almost always is — ordinary, and over before you know it.

But a few times a year, I’m just like you boarding pass in hand, backpack under the seat in front of me, trying to figure out if the guy in 24B is going to claim both armrests.

Here’s the thing most passengers don’t know:

I never stop being a pilot.

Even when I’m in row 24 with a ginger ale, there’s a quiet checklist running in the back of my head before the flight. It’s not anxiety. It’s not paranoia. It’s just the habit of 25 years of flying, the same instincts that kick in before I push the throttles forward.

It runs fast. A minute or two, tops. And most of what I’m checking boils down to one question: is this flight going to leave on time?

So today I’m handing it to you. Seven things I check before every single flight from the moment I walk into the terminal to the moment we close the doors.

1. The Weather — But Not the Way You Think

Most passengers check the weather at their destination. Will it rain? Do I need a jacket?

I check three things:

• Departure airport weather (wind, visibility, thunderstorms nearby)

• Destination weather (same, plus the forecast for my arrival window)

• Anything big happening between the two (a line of storms over the Midwest, for example)

Why? Because weather doesn’t just affect takeoff and landing. It shapes the route. A line of thunderstorms over Kentucky might mean a smoother or bumpier ride depending on how we go around it.

You don’t need to be a meteorologist. I use the same free app most pilots glance at: Windy.com. Zoom out. Look at the big picture between your two cities. If you see a big red blob, expect some deviations. That’s not scary, that’s your crew doing their job.

2. The Aircraft Type — and My Boarding Strategy

This one takes 10 seconds on the airline app and completely changes how I play the boarding game.

The goal isn’t to be first on the plane, it’s to minimize your time sitting in a packed cabin or worst in the Jetty.

But the right wait time depends entirely on what aircraft you’re on. Here’s how I adjust:

Widebody (777, A350, 787, A380): Boarding 250-400 people takes a while. I wait. Sometimes 20-25 minutes after boarding starts. I want to be one of the last 15% on the plane. Overhead bin space is not a concern — there’s plenty. My carry-on will find a home near my seat. What I’m avoiding is 30 extra minutes of sitting in a metal tube while the rest of the cabin files in past my knees.

Narrow-body mainline (737, A320, 757): My sweet spot. 10-15 minutes after general boarding begins. The initial jam has cleared, most bins are still open, and I can walk straight to my row without the stop-and-go shuffle.

Regional jet (CRJ, E175, Embraer 145): Here’s where my strategy flips. On a small regional jet, overhead space is brutally limited — those bins barely fit a backpack, let alone a 22-inch roller. Board too late and you’ll be forced to gate-check your bag, then wait on the jet bridge at your destination to reclaim it.

So on a regional jet, if I’m traveling with a carry-on I actually need? I board earlier. Not in the first wave, never in the first wave but I don’t push my luck either. 5-7 minutes after boarding starts is my move. Enough to let the jam clear, early enough to protect my bag.

The quick rule: Big plane = wait longer, protect your sanity. Small plane with a carry-on = board earlier, protect your bag.

3. My Seat Position

If you’re a nervous flyer, my advice hasn’t changed: sit over or just ahead of the wing. I wrote a full breakdown of why in Pilot’s Secret for a Smooth Flight: Sit Here. Short version — the wing is the pivot point of the aircraft, so turbulence feels noticeably milder there. If bumps make you anxious, that’s your seat.

The line doesn’t look that bad… until it stops moving.

The shutdown just ended. TSA officers are getting paid again.

So most travelers assume things are back to normal.

They’re not.

And that’s where people are getting caught.

Officers who quit don’t come back overnight. Lines at the worst airports won’t normalize for 4 to 6 weeks. Spring break is still in full swing.

And most travelers are still walking in completely unprepared.

How Long Will the Lines Still Be?

Don’t let the deal fool you. While TSA officers receiving paychecks will reduce callouts within days, security lines will improve gradually. Major hubs like Atlanta may not see real improvement until late April.

Nearly 500 officers quit. Training a replacement takes 4 to 6 months. That math doesn’t fix itself this weekend.

The airports still most at risk: ATL, IAH, JFK, LGA, EWR, ORD, BOS, LAS, IAD. Many stopped publishing live wait data — treat any “no data” airport as elevated until further notice.

The airports running surprisingly well right now: DFW, DCA, DTW, CLT, SLC, LAX, BWI — under 15 minutes at most checkpoints.

I fly on long-haul routes between continents the kind of flights that cross oceans and, until a few weeks ago, crossed the Middle East. Before every flight, I sign a document called the Operational Flight Plan. It tells me how much fuel we’re carrying, how much that fuel weighs, what it costs, and what route we’re taking. It’s the first thing I look at and the last thing I think about before I push back from the gate.

I’m telling you this because right now, those flight plans look nothing like they did a month ago. The routes are longer. The fuel loads are heavier. And the cost column the number my airline is paying to put kerosene in my tanks has roughly doubled.

A few weeks ago, jet fuel cost airlines about $60 to $80 a barrel.

Today it’s somewhere above $100+. Brent crude (that’s the global benchmark for oil — think of it as the price tag the whole world watches).

The Strait is still effectively shut, and until tankers are actually sailing through it again, fuel prices will keep swinging in ways I’ve never seen in my career.

What does this mean for the price of your next plane ticket?

Everything. And nothing if you know how to play it.

This article is the guide I’d give a friend sitting next to me in the cockpit. No jargon, no finance-speak just what’s actually happening to fuel, why it matters for your wallet, and exactly how to find the best deal in the middle of it.

First, Let Me Explain How Fuel Affects Your Ticket Price

If you’re not in aviation, you might not realize how central fuel is to the cost of flying you from A to B. Let me put it simply: fuel is to an airline what ingredients are to a restaurant. It’s typically the second-biggest expense after paying the pilots, flight attendants, and ground staff — somewhere between 20% and 30% of what it costs to operate a flight. When fuel doubles in price, it’s like a restaurant seeing the cost of every dish on its menu suddenly spike. The restaurant has to raise prices, shrink portions, or lose money on every plate. Airlines face the exact same choice.

Right now, three things are hitting the industry at the same time, and all of them push your ticket price up.

The Strait of Hormuz Is Closed and That Matters More Than You Think

Let me paint the picture. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway just 21 miles wide at its tightest point between Iran and Oman. About 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through it every day on tanker ships. Think of it as a single-lane bridge that a fifth of the planet’s energy has to cross.

On March 2, Iran’s military declared it closed. They threatened to attack any ship that tried to pass through. And they’ve followed through at least five tankers have been hit, crew members have been killed, and roughly 200 commercial tankers are now anchored outside the Strait, engines off, waiting. The only ships getting through are a handful flying Iranian or Chinese flags.

This has sent fuel prices to genuine record highs. According to S&P Global’s Platts (the industry’s most trusted pricing service), jet fuel has spiked harder than gasoline, diesel, or crude oil — surpassing even the peaks we saw after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The last time jet fuel was anywhere near this expensive, I remember our dispatchers sending us messages mid-flight asking us to slow down to save fuel. We’re back in that territory.

Here’s a detail that most people outside the industry don’t know: roughly half of Europe’s jet fuel imports come from the Middle East. European refineries have been closing in recent years, so the continent has become increasingly dependent on Gulf supply for the actual kerosene that goes into airplane tanks. That supply is now cut off. And there’s no quick substitute other regions of the world are scrambling to protect their own fuel supplies, so Europe can’t just buy its way out of this shortage from somewhere else.

Winter Storm Fern is already the biggest aviation disruption since COVID began. And for much of the country, the worst is still ahead.

Here’s where we stand as of Saturday evening:

• 12,000+ flights already cancelled for the weekend

• Sunday is on track for 8,200+ cancellations — the most for a single day since March 2020

• Over 180 million Americans under winter storm warnings

• 18 states have declared states of emergency

The storm has already hammered the South — Dallas-Fort Worth alone saw 1,300 cancellations, with Nashville, Charlotte, and Atlanta not far behind. Now it’s moving toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where major hubs are bracing for impact. LaGuardia has already cancelled 85% of Sunday flights. Reagan National hit 90%. Newark is at 50%.

This storm spans 2,300 miles — from New Mexico to Maine. Some areas could see up to 25 inches of snow. Others are facing catastrophic ice accumulation that forecasters say could rival hurricane damage.

Here’s what I want you to understand from the flight deck:

Why all these cancellations are actually good news

Airlines don’t cancel flights because they’re being overly cautious. They cancel because the math doesn’t work any other way.

Think about what happens when a flight doesn’t get cancelled proactively:

Your plane pushes back from the gate. It sits on the taxiway for two hours waiting for de-icing. The crew “times out” — their legally mandated rest requirements kick in, and they can no longer fly. Now you’re deplaning back at the terminal at 11 PM with no crew, no hotel voucher (weather isn’t the airline’s fault, so they don’t owe you one), and no options until maybe tomorrow. Maybe the day after.

Meanwhile, that aircraft was supposed to fly three more legs today. Those passengers are now stranded too. The crew that was supposed to pick up the plane in Chicago? They’re stuck. The downstream effects cascade for days.

This is exactly what happened to Southwest during the 2022 holiday meltdown. They tried to operate through bad weather, their systems collapsed, and it took them nearly two weeks to fully recover. The DOT eventually fined them $140 million.

The system learning from its mistakes

When you see “proactive cancellations” announced 24-48 hours before a storm hits, that’s the system working. It’s not ideal for passengers, but it’s the difference between:

Option A: Your flight is cancelled today, you rebook for Tuesday, you’re inconvenienced but functional.

Option B: You get stuck mid-journey with no crew, no plane, no hotel, and every rebooking option is also oversold because the airline tried to operate flights it couldn’t complete.

I’ll take Option A every time.

What actually happens at the airport during a storm

Here’s what most passengers never see:

De-icing operations become the bottleneck. De-icing fluid is a finite resource. The trucks can only service so many aircraft per hour. When it’s actively snowing, the “holdover time” — how long the fluid remains effective — shrinks dramatically. A plane might need to be de-iced twice before takeoff. In severe conditions, three times.

Runway capacity drops. Airports that normally launch 60 departures per hour might drop to 30. Or 15. Or zero, if visibility goes below minimums.

Ground stops cascade. When the FAA issues a ground stop for a major hub, every flight headed there gets held at the gate. If your connecting airport is locked down, you’re not going anywhere either.

Crew legality becomes critical. Pilots and flight attendants have strict limits on duty time. If weather delays push crews past those limits, the flight doesn’t go — even if the weather improves. There’s no “just this once” exception. These rules exist because fatigued crews make mistakes.

If you’re supposed to fly Sunday or Monday

Every major airline has issued travel waivers — Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, all of them. This means you can change your flight without fees or fare differences.

A few things most people don’t realize:

1. You can often rebook yourself through the airline’s app before the cancellation officially hits. Don’t wait for them to cancel, get ahead of it tonight.

2. Weather-related cancellations don’t entitle you to hotels or meals. The airline’s guarantees typically only apply to delays they caused (mechanical issues, crew scheduling errors, etc.). Weather is considered outside their control.

3. Your credit card might help. Many travel credit cards include trip delay insurance that covers hotels and meals when you’re stranded. Check your benefits, you may have coverage you didn’t know about.

   

What to expect after the storm

Even after the snow stops, expect residual delays for 24-48 hours.

Here’s why: Airlines need to reposition aircraft and crews. That plane that was supposed to be in Boston is stuck in Dallas. The crew that was supposed to fly it is somewhere else entirely. It takes careful choreography to get everything back in position.

Airports also need to complete snow removal, de-icing equipment maintenance, and runway inspections before returning to full capacity.

The bottom line

I’ve been flying for 27+ years. I’ve operated through countless storms, diversions, and weather delays. And I can tell you: the most dangerous thing an airline can do is pretend the weather isn’t a factor.

Those 12,000 cancelled flights represent a system choosing safety over schedule pressure. It represents airlines learning from past disasters. It represents thousands of pilots, dispatchers, and operations controllers making the conservative call.

If your flight gets cancelled, I know it’s frustrating. But I’d rather you be frustrated and safe than airborne and at risk.

I know, I know. The window seat is supposed to be the prize. You get the view, the wall to lean on, your own little corner of the plane.

You’re Trapped

It sounds obvious, but most people don’t think about it until they’re six hours into a transatlantic flight and they need to use the bathroom.

You’ve got two people between you and the aisle. They’re asleep. One has a blanket wrapped around them like a cocoon. The other has their tray table covered in food, laptop open, headphones on. You’d have to tap them, wait for them to process what you want, watch them shuffle everything around, stand up in the cramped row, let you squeeze past — and then do it all again when you come back.

So you hold it. You stay put. You don’t stretch your legs. You don’t hydrate properly because you’re already dreading the bathroom trip. And by the time you land, you’re stiff, your back hurts, and you feel worse than you should after sitting down for eight hours.

I’ve seen this hundreds of times from the flight deck and as a passenger myself. The window seat person who doesn’t move the entire flight because they didn’t want to be a bother.

That’s not a comfortable journey. That’s self-imposed imprisonment at 35,000 feet.

The View Isn’t What You Think

Here’s a secret: after takeoff and before landing, there’s not much to see.

You’re above the clouds. It’s white. Or it’s dark. Maybe you catch a sunrise or sunset if you’re lucky with the timing and you’re on the right side of the aircraft. Maybe you see Greenland or the Alps if the routing works out. But for the vast majority of a long flight, you’re staring at a blanket of clouds or blackness.

And half the time, the shade is down anyway. The cabin crew dims the lights on overnight flights, and your neighbors want to sleep. That window you fought for? It’s covered.

The view matters for maybe 30 minutes total, takeoff, landing, and one or two moments in between if you’re lucky. The rest of the time, that window seat is just a wall you’ve pinned yourself against.

The Health Issue Nobody Talks About

This isn’t just about comfort. It’s about your body.

On long flights, you need to move. Sitting in one position for eight, ten, twelve hours is genuinely bad for you. Deep vein thrombosis — blood clots in your legs — is a real risk on ultra-long-haul flights. The people most at risk are the ones who don’t move.

The Flight Itself: You’re Already On Destination Time

This mental shift matters more than you’d think. If it’s 2 AM in Paris when I’m settling into my seat in Newark when travelling as a passenger, I’m not watching movies and eating pretzels. I’m declining the meal, putting on an eye mask, and treating this as the middle of my night.

Here’s what I tell nervous flyers: if seat location made a statistically significant difference in safety, airlines would charge more for those seats, and the FAA would require passengers be informed. They don’t, because it doesn’t.

What actually matters for evacuation? Being mentally prepared, knowing where your nearest exits are (count the rows), keeping your shoes on during takeoff and landing, and not being intoxicated. That’s what saves lives, not whether you’re in 14A or 38C.

Here’s the critical part: MCTs aren’t marketing decisions. They’re operational standards that airlines file with regulatory authorities and update based on actual performance data. If an airline consistently misses connections at a particular airport, they’re required to increase the MCT.

The Math Behind Your 45-Minute Connection

Let’s break down what actually happens during that 45 minutes at a major hub:

Arrival Phase (10 minutes)

• Your flight lands

While airline executives and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have expressed optimism about recovery before the holiday rush, the system needs time to stabilize. • Sunday, November 30 (the busiest day with over 3.2 million domestic seats scheduled)

Smarter Alternatives:

If you have any flexibility, here’s what I’d do:

1. Fly Tuesday morning (November 25) before noon, you’ll beat the afternoon crush and still make it for Wednesday dinner prep.

2. Book the earliest flight possible: Morning flights departing before 9 a.m. are 57% less prone to cancellations than late-evening departures. As a pilot, I can tell you why: crew rest issues, maintenance delays, and weather problems all compound as the day progresses.
