I’ve heard it hundreds of times.

A passenger in first class, half-joking as they sip their drink, leans toward a flight attendant and says: “So… are the pilots actually up there, or did the computer take over?”

Everyone laughs. But the question is serious and the assumption behind it is one of the most common misconceptions in all of aviation.

People genuinely believe that once autopilot is on, the cockpit goes quiet. That we kick back, read a magazine, maybe catch a nap.

I want to set the record straight. Not just to defend my profession — but because understanding what’s really happening up front might be the single most reassuring thing you’ll ever learn about flying.

WHAT YOU PICTURE

Here’s what most passengers imagine:

Climb to cruise altitude. Press a button. Put the plane on autopilot. Coffee. Crossword puzzle. Maybe a quick nap. Wake up 8 hours later for descent.

“The computer’s flying. The pilots are just there in case something goes wrong.”

I understand where this comes from. Aviation movies. News reports. A general sense that modern aircraft are so sophisticated they practically fly themselves.

And on the surface? It looks that way. Cruising at 37,000 feet, the aircraft is smooth, stable, and seemingly serene.

But here’s what you don’t see.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING

The moment autopilot engages — typically a few minutes after takeoff — it doesn’t mean we stop flying the aircraft. It means we change how we’re flying it.

Think of autopilot like cruise control in a car. You’ve set your speed, but you’re still steering, watching the road, anticipating the curve ahead, ready to brake if something unexpected happens. You haven’t handed the wheel to the car and gone to sleep.

Now multiply that by a hundred. Add weather systems across three time zones. Air traffic control instructions every few minutes. Fuel calculations updating in real time. Contingency planning for airports you might never visit.

That’s closer to what we’re doing.

On a long-haul flight, my co-pilot and I will monitor dozens of systems, receive multiple re-routes, cross-check fuel burns against our flight plan, and brief for alternate procedures — all while the autopilot holds our altitude to within 10 feet.

But here’s where it gets genuinely interesting — and this is the part most passengers never hear about.

The autopilot isn’t making decisions. We are. Every input it follows comes from us. Every constraint it works within, we set. Every change in route, altitude, or speed — that’s the pilots talking to the aircraft through a system called the Flight Management Computer.

And managing that system, while simultaneously monitoring engine performance, weather radar, hydraulic pressures, fuel balance, cabin altitude, and a hundred other parameters…

That’s a full-time job. That’s our full-time job.

What I’m about to share inside the paid section is something most people never get to see: a real breakdown of what a typical cruise phase looks like from the left seat — the decisions being made, the systems being watched, and the one thing that happens on almost every long-haul flight that would surprise even the most frequent flyer.

$108 $115 I fly on long-haul routes between continents the kind of flights that cross oceans and, until two weeks ago, crossed the Middle East. Before every flight, I sign a document called the Operational Flight Plan. It tells me how much fuel we’re carrying, how much that fuel weighs, what it costs, and what route we’re taking. It’s the first thing I look at and the last thing I think about before I push back from the gate.

I’m telling you this because right now, those flight plans look nothing like they did a month ago. The routes are longer. The fuel loads are heavier. And the cost column the number my airline is paying to put kerosene in my tanks has roughly doubled.

Two weeks ago, jet fuel cost airlines about $85 to $90 a barrel.

Today it’s somewhere between $100 and $110. Brent crude (that’s the global benchmark for oil — think of it as the price tag the whole world watches) briefly punched through $126 before falling back on Tuesday after a wild news cycle: the U.S. Energy Secretary posted on social media that the Navy had escorted a tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, which turned out to be false and was quickly deleted. Oil dropped to around $88 on that chaos, but don’t let the dip fool you. The Strait is still effectively shut, and until tankers are actually sailing through it again, fuel prices will keep swinging in ways I’ve never seen in my career.

What does this mean for the price of your next plane ticket?

Everything. And nothing if you know how to play it.

This article is the guide I’d give a friend sitting next to me in the cockpit. No jargon, no finance-speak just what’s actually happening to fuel, why it matters for your wallet, and exactly how to find the best deal in the middle of it.

First, Let Me Explain How Fuel Affects Your Ticket Price

If you’re not in aviation, you might not realize how central fuel is to the cost of flying you from A to B. Let me put it simply: fuel is to an airline what ingredients are to a restaurant. It’s typically the second-biggest expense after paying the pilots, flight attendants, and ground staff — somewhere between 20% and 30% of what it costs to operate a flight. When fuel doubles in price, it’s like a restaurant seeing the cost of every dish on its menu suddenly spike. The restaurant has to raise prices, shrink portions, or lose money on every plate. Airlines face the exact same choice.

Right now, three things are hitting the industry at the same time, and all of them push your ticket price up.

The Strait of Hormuz Is Closed and That Matters More Than You Think

Let me paint the picture. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway just 21 miles wide at its tightest point between Iran and Oman. About 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through it every day on tanker ships. Think of it as a single-lane bridge that a fifth of the planet’s energy has to cross.

On March 2, Iran’s military declared it closed. They threatened to attack any ship that tried to pass through. And they’ve followed through at least five tankers have been hit, crew members have been killed, and roughly 200 commercial tankers are now anchored outside the Strait, engines off, waiting. The only ships getting through are a handful flying Iranian or Chinese flags.

This has sent fuel prices to genuine record highs. According to S&P Global’s Platts (the industry’s most trusted pricing service), jet fuel has spiked harder than gasoline, diesel, or crude oil — surpassing even the peaks we saw after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The last time jet fuel was anywhere near this expensive, I remember our dispatchers sending us messages mid-flight asking us to slow down to save fuel. We’re back in that territory.

Here’s a detail that most people outside the industry don’t know: roughly half of Europe’s jet fuel imports come from the Middle East. European refineries have been closing in recent years, so the continent has become increasingly dependent on Gulf supply for the actual kerosene that goes into airplane tanks. That supply is now cut off. And there’s no quick substitute other regions of the world are scrambling to protect their own fuel supplies, so Europe can’t just buy its way out of this shortage from somewhere else.

Let me paint you a picture.

You’re in seat 27F. The seatbelt sign just came on. The cabin goes quiet except for the rattle of overhead bins and the nervous cough of the guy across the aisle. Your coffee is doing a little dance in its cup. Your knuckles are white on the armrest.

Now let me tell you what’s happening thirty metres ahead of you, behind the locked door.

I’m sipping my coffee.

Seriously. That’s it. Maybe I’ve turned the seatbelt sign on, adjusted our altitude by a thousand feet, and gone back to my cup of Yorkshire Tea. My heart rate hasn’t changed. My copilot and I might be mid-conversation about where we’re eating on the layover.

That disconnect between what turbulence feels like in the cabin and what it looks like from the flight deck is one of the most misunderstood things in all of aviation. And after thousands of hours in the cockpit, I think it’s time I walked you through it properly.

The dirty secret about turbulence

Here’s something most pilots won’t say out loud in polite company: turbulence is, almost always, a non-event for us.

Not because we’re brave. Not because we’ve been desensitised. But because we understand what’s actually happening and what isn’t.

Turbulence is just the aircraft moving through uneven air. That’s it. The plane isn’t falling. It isn’t breaking. It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do: flex, absorb, and keep flying. Modern airliners are tested to withstand forces far beyond anything you’ll encounter on a commercial flight. The wings on a Boeing 787 can flex upward by nearly 8 metres before they’d be in trouble. You’ll never get close to that number in normal operations. Not even in the bumpy stuff that makes passengers gasp.

What you feel as violent jolts are usually altitude changes of 10 to 30 feet. Sometimes less. Your lift going from the ground floor to the first floor is a bigger movement. But because you can’t see the horizon, because you’re strapped into a metal tube with no frame of reference, your brain interprets it as danger. That’s not a flaw in you — it’s a flaw in the environment. You’re a perfectly rational human being having a perfectly irrational experience.

What we actually see (and don’t see)

Here’s where it gets interesting for the avgeeks.

From the cockpit, turbulence is largely invisible. You can’t see it. There’s no dark cloud with a warning label. No visible wall of “rough air” approaching. Most of the time, we know it’s coming because other aircraft have reported it ahead of us, or because our weather radar is showing precipitation returns that suggest convective activity.

But here’s the thing clear air turbulence (CAT) doesn’t show on radar at all. It’s associated with jet streams and atmospheric shear, not moisture. So it’s genuinely invisible. We rely entirely on pilot reports (PIREPs), dispatcher information, and increasingly sophisticated atmospheric models to anticipate it.

When we do hit it, here’s the cockpit reality:

The autopilot stays engaged. It’s managing the ride far more smoothly than a human could. We might ask ATC for a different altitude “Centre, requesting flight level three-seven-zero for smoother ride conditions” is a sentence I’ve said hundreds of times. We’ll check in with the cabin crew to make sure they’re safe. And we turn the seatbelt sign on and we genuinely want you to listen to it.

That last point matters. More on that in a moment.

The five types of turbulence (and what each one means)

If you really want to understand turbulence like a pilot, you need to know the categories. We report them using a standardised scale, and each one tells a very different story.

Light turbulence — Slight, erratic changes in altitude or attitude. Your drink might ripple. Cabin crew continue service. From the cockpit: barely worth mentioning. I might not even turn the seatbelt sign on.

Light to moderate — A bit more persistent. You feel it in your seat. Unsecured objects might shift. Cabin crew might pause the drinks cart. From the cockpit: a mental note, maybe a PIREP to help the aircraft behind us.

Moderate turbulence — Now we’re paying attention. Definite strain against your seatbelt. Walking is difficult. Cabin service is suspended. From the cockpit: the autopilot is working harder, we’re likely requesting a new altitude, and we’re keeping a closer eye on the weather picture. But the aircraft is still well within its limits.

Severe turbulence — Rare. Genuinely rare. Occupants are forced violently against their seatbelts. Unsecured objects are thrown around the cabin. From the cockpit: we’re fully focused, coordinating with ATC, possibly deviating off course. But even here, the aircraft is designed for this. The structure can handle it. It’s the unrestrained humans inside that are at risk.

Extreme turbulence — Almost never encountered in commercial aviation. The aircraft is practically uncontrollable momentarily. This is what causes the dramatic headlines, but most career airline pilots will never experience it. I never have.

The important pattern to notice: the danger isn’t to the aircraft. It’s to the people inside it who aren’t wearing their seatbelts. The aircraft doesn’t care about turbulence. You need to care about your seatbelt.

An insider’s confession: the seatbelt sign politics

Here’s something passengers don’t know. The seatbelt sign is a surprisingly political decision.

Turn it on too early and leave it on too long? Passengers ignore it. Cabin crew can’t do their service. The airline gets complaints. Turn it off too soon? Someone gets hurt and it’s a legal issue.

Every captain manages it differently. Some are conservative — sign on the moment there’s a whisper of bumps. Others wait until it’s clearly needed. Neither approach is wrong, but it creates an inconsistency that confuses passengers. You might fly one leg with the sign on for two hours and the next with it barely flickering.

My personal philosophy? I’d rather have it on ten minutes too early than ten seconds too late. Because the injuries that happen in turbulence and they do happen are almost exclusively to people who weren’t buckled up. Flight attendants reaching for overhead bins. Passengers walking to the lavatory. People who thought the bumps were over.

The single best piece of advice I can give any flyer: keep your seatbelt loosely fastened whenever you’re seated.

Always. Even when the sign is off. It costs you nothing and it could save you from a serious injury. A quick reminder most passengers don’t realize:

What the instruments tell us

For the technically curious: when turbulence hits, here’s what’s happening on my flight deck displays.

The primary flight display (PFD) shows small, rapid deviations in pitch and altitude. In moderate turbulence, you might see the altitude bouncing around by 50 to 100 feet. The airspeed might fluctuate by 10 to 15 knots. These are numbers that look alarming on paper but are well within normal parameters.

The autopilot is constantly correcting making micro-adjustments to the control surfaces dozens of times per second. It’s doing a far better job than I would manually. In fact, in most turbulence, the worst thing a pilot could do is disconnect the autopilot and try to hand-fly. The automation smooths the ride. We let it work.

On the navigation display, if the turbulence is associated with weather, we’re painting it with our onboard radar. You’ll see returns in green, yellow, and red — with red and magenta being areas of heavy precipitation that we’ll deviate around, sometimes by 20 or 30 miles. We never fly through red returns if we can avoid it. That’s a hard rule.

“But what about that flight that dropped 1,000 feet?”

You’ve seen the headlines. “Plane drops 1,000 feet in seconds.” “Passengers thrown to ceiling.” “Flight from hell.”

Let me decode those for you.

First, the reported altitude drops are almost always exaggerated. What gets reported as “1,000 feet” was probably 100 to 200 feet. Human perception in an enclosed space without visual references is wildly unreliable. It feels like freefall. It isn’t.

Second, the injuries in those events and this is critical are almost always to unrestrained passengers and cabin crew. The aircraft lands safely. Every time. The structure is intact. The engines are fine. The wings didn’t come off. People got hurt because they weren’t strapped in.

Third, those events make the news precisely because they’re rare. You don’t see headlines about the tens of thousands of flights every single day that experience turbulence and land without incident. Because that’s not a story. That’s just Tuesday.

The future of turbulence forecasting

This one’s for the avgeeks and frequent flyers.

The industry is getting dramatically better at predicting and avoiding turbulence. LIDAR-based detection systems are in development that can sense clear air turbulence minutes before an aircraft encounters it — something radar can’t do. Airlines are sharing real-time turbulence data across fleets, creating a constantly updating map of atmospheric conditions.

Some newer aircraft have gust-load alleviation systems that actively sense turbulence and move the control surfaces to counteract it before you feel it. The ride on a modern widebody is already noticeably smoother than aircraft from twenty years ago.

And atmospheric modelling is improving every year. The forecasts I get in my pre-flight briefing pack are significantly more accurate than what we had even a decade ago. We know, within reasonable probability, where the rough air is and what altitude will give us the smoothest ride.

Turbulence isn’t going away if anything, some research suggests it may increase with climate change as jet stream patterns shift. But our ability to predict it, avoid it, and manage it when we can’t avoid it is better than it’s ever been.

So what do I want you to take away from this?

Three things.

One: Turbulence feels far worse than it is. The gap between passenger perception and cockpit reality is enormous. What terrifies you in the cabin is routine for us up front. That’s not dismissive, it’s reassuring.

Two: The aircraft can handle it. Full stop. These machines are over-engineered to an extraordinary degree. The wings flex because they’re designed to flex. The fuselage creaks because it’s built to move. Everything you hear and feel in turbulence is the aircraft doing its job exactly as intended.

Three: Wear your seatbelt. Always. The only real risk in turbulence is to unsecured humans. Be a secured human. It’s the simplest thing you can do to make turbulence a complete non-issue.

Next time you hit a bumpy patch at 37,000 feet, I want you to picture the cockpit. Two pilots, calm and composed. Autopilot doing its thing. A cup of coffee on the centre console. Maybe a conversation about the hotel restaurant.

🔴 UPDATE March 27: Day 27. Here’s what’s changed since the last update.

EASA bulletin expires today — expect another extension. The CZIB covering Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia at all altitudes expires today, March 27. EASA and the European Commission say they will continue to monitor whether the risk level increases or decreases EASA. The last revision on March 18 added a narrow exception: operators can transit through parts of southern Oman and Saudi Arabia south of the OBSOT-DANOM-KEDON-VELOD line, at FL320 or above only, and only with a current risk assessment Bizav Ops. Expect renewal into April — no one in the industry thinks this is getting lifted this week.

Emirates holding steady at ~70% capacity. Emirates is operating roughly 70% of its pre-crisis schedule, while flydubai is running at about 30% LoyaltyLobby. These numbers have been stable for over a week. Emirates says it’s aiming to restore 100% of network capacity by March 29, but that’s contingent on airspace availability and security conditions Wego Travel Blog and given what we’ve seen, I’d take that date with a large grain of salt. DXB itself is reportedly operating at around 40–45% of normal traffic. Emirates has extended Skywards tier status and paused miles expiry through June 30, and its flexible cancellation/refund policy now covers flights through April 30.

Qatar Airways still severely constrained. Qatar Airways is operating roughly 39 departing passenger flights from Doha today — about 25% of pre-crisis capacity LoyaltyLobby. That’s up from the 15 daily flights they were running for the first two-plus weeks, but it’s plateaued. The airline has sent several aircraft into storage in Spain and Thailand LoyaltyLobby not the move of a carrier expecting a fast rebound. Qatar Airways yesterday extended its flexible cancellation and change policy for flights through June 15, 2026 LoyaltyLobby, which tells you everything about their internal timeline. The planned March 28 “full restart” is now better understood as a gradual expansion to 33 additional destinations through April 15. Etihad is running at roughly 50% of pre-war capacity Wego Travel Blog.

Western carriers pulling back further, not closer. The suspensions have gotten dramatically longer since my last update:

• Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, ITA, Edelweiss): All flights to Dubai suspended through May 31 Time Out Dubai. Eurowings has suspended Dubai flights until October 24, 2026 Travel And Tour World. Tel Aviv through at least May 31.

• British Airways: Flights to Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, and Tel Aviv cancelled through May 31. Doha cancelled through April 30 Euronews. Abu Dhabi still gone through at least October (as reported March 10).

• KLM: Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam suspended through May 17. Tel Aviv through April 11 Time Out Dubai.

• Air France: Dubai suspended through March 31 Time Out Dubai. Tel Aviv and Beirut through early April. Riyadh through March 31.

• Cathay Pacific: Dubai and Riyadh suspended through May 31 Euronews.

• Air Canada: Dubai suspended through April 30. Tel Aviv through May 2.

• Finnair: Doha and Dubai through at least March 28.

• Aegean: Dubai and Riyadh suspended through April 19; Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Amman through April 23 Scandinavian Airlines.

The pattern is clear: every time these airlines update their advisories, the dates push further out. We’re no longer talking about weeks. Some of these are now measured in months.

Gulf Air still operating from Dammam. Bahrain’s flag carrier has expanded its temporary operations from King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, running special flights to Paris, Manila, Cairo, Casablanca, Chennai, Frankfurt, Nairobi, London, Mumbai, and Bangkok Euronews through at least March 28. Bahrain’s own airspace remains effectively closed.

Strait of Hormuz: Iran formalizing control. This is no longer a blockade — it’s becoming a managed toll system. On March 26, Iran’s Foreign Minister announced that ships from China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan would be allowed to transit Wikipedia. Western-flagged ships remain blocked. Iran is now charging commercial ships up to $2 million to transit the strait, with an Iranian lawmaker confirming the fees cover the country’s war costs CBS News. Before this crisis, passage was free and protected under international law. Israel says it killed the Iranian naval commander Alireza Tangsiri on March 26, accusing him of directly overseeing the Hormuz blockade Wikipedia. Daily transit is down to about 6 ships from the pre-crisis average of 130 per day. Some 20,000 sailors remain stranded on hundreds of ships in the Gulf, with at least seven seafarers killed in Iranian attacks NBC News.

Diplomacy going nowhere fast. Trump extended his deadline for striking Iranian power plants by 10 days to April 6, saying “talks are ongoing” NPR. Iran has responded with a five-point counterproposal demanding sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and a complete end to “aggression” The Hill — Iran’s Foreign Minister said there are no negotiations taking place, only messages through mediators Al Jazeera. Israel is accelerating strikes on Iranian weapons factories and infrastructure in Isfahan Fox News. The Pentagon is considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the region. No ceasefire is imminent.

Jet fuel and the knock-on effects. China and Thailand have suspended jet fuel exports, and Vietnamese authorities have warned their aviation industry to prepare for possible flight reductions in April Expeditors. This is the crisis starting to ripple well beyond the Middle East.

The bottom line from the flight deck: We are now 27 days in. The temporary workarounds — the Dammam hub for Gulf Air, the limited Qatar corridors, the Emirates reduced schedule — are hardening into the new normal. Western carrier suspensions that started as “through mid-March” are now “through May” and in some cases “through October.” The EASA bulletin will almost certainly be extended again. If you’re planning travel through or near the Gulf, build in maximum flexibility, book refundable fares, and do not assume any flight will operate as scheduled. The two corridor system (north through the Caucasus, south through Egypt/western Saudi/Oman) remains intact but congested. If either Turkey/Azerbaijan or Oman gets drawn further into the conflict, even those routes narrow dramatically. 🔴 UPDATE March 18: A lot has happened in the past week. Here’s what you need to know:

Dubai airport hit again badly. On March 16, an Iranian drone struck a fuel storage tank at DXB, igniting a fire and shutting down the world’s busiest international airport for over seven hours — the longest halt since the crisis began. Emirates diverted flights to Al Maktoum and even inland to Al Ain, 130 km from Dubai. This was the fourth drone incident at DXB since Feb 28. The UAE also did a full emergency airspace closure overnight on March 16–17 during fresh missile and drone waves. Emirates has quietly started using Jeddah and Medina as technical refueling stops on some long-haul flights, and shifted some operations to DWC and Abu Dhabi — likely because of the fuel infrastructure damage at DXB.

Qatar Airways is back sort of. Starting today (March 18), Qatar Airways is operating a revised limited schedule to and from Doha connecting to 70+ destinations, running through March 28. Bookings are open. This is a significant step — Doha was fully closed until now. But these are limited approved corridor flights, not a full reopening of Qatari airspace.

Gulf Air now flying from Saudi Arabia. Bahrain’s flag carrier has set up temporary operations from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, running limited flights to London, Frankfurt, Mumbai, Bangkok, and Nairobi through March 28 — since Bahrain itself remains closed.

Lufthansa Group suspended through March 28 for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman, and Erbil; through April 9 for Tel Aviv; through April 5 for Riyadh. Air France suspended Dubai and Riyadh through March 18–20, Tel Aviv and Beirut through March 18+. Air Canada suspended Dubai and Tel Aviv through March 23.

Iran is letting some ships through selectively. Turkish, Indian, Saudi, and Chinese-flagged vessels have been permitted passage in recent days, but Western-flagged ships remain blocked. Iran has made 21 confirmed attacks on merchant ships since Feb 28.

EASA’s danger bulletin covering Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia at all altitudes expires today expect another extension.

The bottom line from the flight deck: we are now 18 days into this crisis and the situation is not improving. It’s getting more complex. The temporary workarounds are becoming semi-permanent. If you’re planning travel through or near the Gulf, everything in this article still applies — but with more urgency. Read on.

I’m writing this from home in the US on my days off, watching Flightradar24 paint a picture I’ve never seen in fifteen years of flying long-haul routes through the Middle East: a hole in the sky where one of the world’s busiest aviation crossroads used to be.

Since U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28 and Tehran’s retaliatory fire spread across the Gulf, more than 12,300 flights have been cancelled across seven major Middle Eastern airports. Over 20,000 passengers were affected in the UAE alone. Another 8,000 transit passengers remain stuck in Doha. Hundreds of thousands of travelers worldwide have been stranded, rerouted, or left refreshing airline apps at 3 a.m.

This article is for them and for anyone planning to fly to, from, or through the Gulf in the coming weeks. I’m going to give you the information I’d give a friend sitting next to me in the cockpit: what’s actually happening, which airports are functioning, where the deals are hiding, and how to make smart decisions when the usual rules of air travel no longer apply.

The Situation Right Now: What Pilots See

Let me paint the picture from the flight deck. The central Middle East corridor, the airway superhighway connecting Europe to Asia that runs through the Gulf is effectively shut. The airspace over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Bahrain, and Kuwait is closed. The UAE and Qatar have begun limited operations, but capacity remains a fraction of normal. Missile and drone strikes continue across the region, and on March 7, a drone struck near Terminal 3 at Dubai International, briefly halting all operations again.

EASA (the European aviation safety authority) has issued a bulletin advising operators to avoid the airspace of Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia at all altitudes through at least March 11. That’s not a suggestion, it’s the strongest language they use short of a prohibition.

For pilots, this means the two traditional bypass routes are now in heavy use: the northern corridor through the Caucasus and Afghanistan, and the southern route via Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Both add 60 to 90 minutes to a typical Europe-Asia sector. Fuel costs are up, crews are displaced across five continents, and aircraft are out of position everywhere.

The Two Corridors: What’s Left

Maps from Flightradar24 tell the story more clearly than any briefing could. Air travel between Europe and Asia is increasingly becoming a challenge. Where the Gulf used to be a dense web of crisscrossing traffic — the busiest aviation crossroads on earth there is now a gaping void. The image above shows the conflict zones that have combined to create this crisis: the Iran/Middle East war at the center, Russian aggression in Ukraine to the north, the civil wars in Yemen and Sudan, and the failed state of Somalia to the south.

There are only two corridors left which allow uninterrupted travel between Europe and Asia. The first runs north through the Caucasus (Georgia, Azerbaijan) and over Central Asia. The second threads south through Egypt, across Saudi Arabia’s western airspace, and down through Oman to the Indian Ocean. Both are now carrying the traffic that used to be spread across an entire region. They are narrow, congested, and increasingly fragile.

Here is what concerns me most as a pilot: extending the current war to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Oman, three countries which already have to deal with Iranian drones and missiles would further complicate matters dramatically.

On March 4, a ballistic missile launched from Iran was intercepted over southern Turkey by NATO air defenses. On March 5, an Iranian drone struck the terminal building at Nakhchivan Airport in Azerbaijan, right on the Iran border. Both of these incidents occurred along the northern bypass corridor, the same corridor that most European carriers are now routing their Asia-bound traffic through.

If either Turkey or Azerbaijan were forced to close their airspace even temporarily, the northern corridor would collapse. If Oman, which has become the critical staging hub for evacuation and repositioning flights, were drawn further into the conflict, the southern corridor would narrow to a thread. At that point, the only viable Europe-to-Asia routing would swing far south over sub-Saharan Africa, adding three to four hours to journeys that already take longer than they should.

This isn’t speculation. It’s what flight planners at every major airline are actively contingency-planning for right now. And it’s why, if you’re booking travel through this region, you need to understand not just what’s closed today but what could close tomorrow.

You’re going to stand in that pretzel position for 5–10 minutes while your carry-on presses against the overhead bin. Nobody is getting off this aircraft any faster because you’re vertical.

3. 🎧 Ignoring the Safety Briefing Completely

I get it—you’ve flown a hundred times and you know where the exits are. But here’s something most people don’t realize: every aircraft type has different exit configurations, different emergency procedures, and different brace positions. What you learned on one airplane does not apply to another. Our flight attendants aren’t performing a theatrical show for their own amusement. Winter Storm Fern is already the biggest aviation disruption since COVID began. And for much of the country, the worst is still ahead.

Here’s where we stand as of Saturday evening:

• 12,000+ flights already cancelled for the weekend

• Sunday is on track for 8,200+ cancellations — the most for a single day since March 2020

• Over 180 million Americans under winter storm warnings

• 18 states have declared states of emergency

The storm has already hammered the South — Dallas-Fort Worth alone saw 1,300 cancellations, with Nashville, Charlotte, and Atlanta not far behind. Now it’s moving toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where major hubs are bracing for impact. LaGuardia has already cancelled 85% of Sunday flights. Reagan National hit 90%. Newark is at 50%.

This storm spans 2,300 miles — from New Mexico to Maine. Some areas could see up to 25 inches of snow. Others are facing catastrophic ice accumulation that forecasters say could rival hurricane damage.

Here’s what I want you to understand from the flight deck:

Why all these cancellations are actually good news

Airlines don’t cancel flights because they’re being overly cautious. They cancel because the math doesn’t work any other way.

Think about what happens when a flight doesn’t get cancelled proactively:

Your plane pushes back from the gate. It sits on the taxiway for two hours waiting for de-icing. The crew “times out” — their legally mandated rest requirements kick in, and they can no longer fly. Now you’re deplaning back at the terminal at 11 PM with no crew, no hotel voucher (weather isn’t the airline’s fault, so they don’t owe you one), and no options until maybe tomorrow. Maybe the day after.

Meanwhile, that aircraft was supposed to fly three more legs today. Those passengers are now stranded too. The crew that was supposed to pick up the plane in Chicago? They’re stuck. The downstream effects cascade for days.

This is exactly what happened to Southwest during the 2022 holiday meltdown. They tried to operate through bad weather, their systems collapsed, and it took them nearly two weeks to fully recover. The DOT eventually fined them $140 million.

The system learning from its mistakes

When you see “proactive cancellations” announced 24-48 hours before a storm hits, that’s the system working. It’s not ideal for passengers, but it’s the difference between:

Option A: Your flight is cancelled today, you rebook for Tuesday, you’re inconvenienced but functional.

Option B: You get stuck mid-journey with no crew, no plane, no hotel, and every rebooking option is also oversold because the airline tried to operate flights it couldn’t complete.

I’ll take Option A every time.

What actually happens at the airport during a storm

Here’s what most passengers never see:

De-icing operations become the bottleneck. De-icing fluid is a finite resource. The trucks can only service so many aircraft per hour. When it’s actively snowing, the “holdover time” — how long the fluid remains effective — shrinks dramatically. A plane might need to be de-iced twice before takeoff. In severe conditions, three times.

Runway capacity drops. Airports that normally launch 60 departures per hour might drop to 30. Or 15. Or zero, if visibility goes below minimums.

Ground stops cascade. When the FAA issues a ground stop for a major hub, every flight headed there gets held at the gate. If your connecting airport is locked down, you’re not going anywhere either.

Crew legality becomes critical. Pilots and flight attendants have strict limits on duty time. If weather delays push crews past those limits, the flight doesn’t go — even if the weather improves. There’s no “just this once” exception. These rules exist because fatigued crews make mistakes.

If you’re supposed to fly Sunday or Monday

Every major airline has issued travel waivers — Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, all of them. This means you can change your flight without fees or fare differences.

A few things most people don’t realize:

1. You can often rebook yourself through the airline’s app before the cancellation officially hits. Don’t wait for them to cancel, get ahead of it tonight.

2. Weather-related cancellations don’t entitle you to hotels or meals. The airline’s guarantees typically only apply to delays they caused (mechanical issues, crew scheduling errors, etc.). Weather is considered outside their control.

3. Your credit card might help. Many travel credit cards include trip delay insurance that covers hotels and meals when you’re stranded. Check your benefits, you may have coverage you didn’t know about.

   

What to expect after the storm

Even after the snow stops, expect residual delays for 24-48 hours.

Here’s why: Airlines need to reposition aircraft and crews. That plane that was supposed to be in Boston is stuck in Dallas. The crew that was supposed to fly it is somewhere else entirely. It takes careful choreography to get everything back in position.

Airports also need to complete snow removal, de-icing equipment maintenance, and runway inspections before returning to full capacity.

The bottom line

I’ve been flying for 27+ years. I’ve operated through countless storms, diversions, and weather delays. And I can tell you: the most dangerous thing an airline can do is pretend the weather isn’t a factor.

Those 12,000 cancelled flights represent a system choosing safety over schedule pressure. It represents airlines learning from past disasters. It represents thousands of pilots, dispatchers, and operations controllers making the conservative call.

If your flight gets cancelled, I know it’s frustrating. But I’d rather you be frustrated and safe than airborne and at risk.

I know, I know. The window seat is supposed to be the prize. You get the view, the wall to lean on, your own little corner of the plane.

I used to think that too. Then I spent 25+ years flying and traveling for work, and I changed my mind.

On long flights anything over four or five hours, I avoid the window. Here’s why:

You’re Trapped

It sounds obvious, but most people don’t think about it until they’re six hours into a transatlantic flight and they need to use the bathroom.

You’ve got two people between you and the aisle. They’re asleep. One has a blanket wrapped around them like a cocoon. The other has their tray table covered in food, laptop open, headphones on. You’d have to tap them, wait for them to process what you want, watch them shuffle everything around, stand up in the cramped row, let you squeeze past — and then do it all again when you come back.

So you hold it. You stay put. You don’t stretch your legs. You don’t hydrate properly because you’re already dreading the bathroom trip. And by the time you land, you’re stiff, your back hurts, and you feel worse than you should after sitting down for eight hours.

I’ve seen this hundreds of times from the flight deck and as a passenger myself. The window seat person who doesn’t move the entire flight because they didn’t want to be a bother.

That’s not a comfortable journey. That’s self-imposed imprisonment at 35,000 feet.

The View Isn’t What You Think

Here’s a secret: after takeoff and before landing, there’s not much to see.

You’re above the clouds. It’s white. Or it’s dark. Maybe you catch a sunrise or sunset if you’re lucky with the timing and you’re on the right side of the aircraft. Maybe you see Greenland or the Alps if the routing works out. But for the vast majority of a long flight, you’re staring at a blanket of clouds or blackness.

And half the time, the shade is down anyway. The cabin crew dims the lights on overnight flights, and your neighbors want to sleep. That window you fought for? It’s covered.

The view matters for maybe 30 minutes total, takeoff, landing, and one or two moments in between if you’re lucky. The rest of the time, that window seat is just a wall you’ve pinned yourself against.

The Health Issue Nobody Talks About

This isn’t just about comfort. It’s about your body.

On long flights, you need to move. Sitting in one position for eight, ten, twelve hours is genuinely bad for you. Deep vein thrombosis — blood clots in your legs — is a real risk on ultra-long-haul flights. The people most at risk are the ones who don’t move.

Here’s what I tell nervous flyers: if seat location made a statistically significant difference in safety, airlines would charge more for those seats, and the FAA would require passengers be informed. They don’t, because it doesn’t.

What actually matters for evacuation? Being mentally prepared, knowing where your nearest exits are (count the rows), keeping your shoes on during takeoff and landing, and not being intoxicated. That’s what saves lives, not whether you’re in 14A or 38C.

2. Book the earliest flight possible: Morning flights departing before 9 a.m. are 57% less prone to cancellations than late-evening departures. The Scam in Action

Picture this: Nicholas Meyer paid extra for window seats on a series of flights this past weekend from New York to Orange County, California, with a layover in Atlanta. The first leg went fine, he got his window and enjoyed the view. But when he boarded his connecting flight, a Boeing 757-200, he discovered his "window seat" was actually next to... nothing. Just a blank wall where a window should be.

"Plaintiff had no option but to spend the ensuing four-and-a-half hour flight next to a blank wall," the lawsuit states. Now Meyer is suing Delta Air Lines in federal court in New York.

The United case is even more egregious. Aviva Copaken of Los Angeles paid between $45.99 and $169.99 for window seats on three separate United flights departing from LAX this spring. Not a single one had an actual window. Fellow plaintiff Marc Brenman of San Francisco used points and benefits to pay for what turned out to be a windowless seat on a United flight from San Francisco to D.C.

1. Always check SeatGuru.com first

• Search by airline and specific aircraft type

• Look for seats marked "No window" or "Misaligned window"

• Red-coded seats have significant problems

2. Avoid these danger zones:

• First and last few rows of each cabin section

• Seats near galleys and lavatories

3. Target the safe zone:

• Choose seats in rows 6-15 on most narrow-body aircraft

When in Doubt
