You probably saw it yesterday. The headline writes itself:

If you’re someone who already grips the armrest at takeoff, your stomach just went through the floor. The one thing you assumed was a given that the person in the left seat is allowed to be there suddenly feels like a question.

So take a breath.

I want to walk you through this one the way I’d brief it to my own crew. Because the headline and the reality are two very different aircraft.

Here’s the part I’ll say plainly before anything else: the man could fly the plane. That was never the allegation.

What actually happened

On Tuesday, Peel Regional Police announced the results of an investigation they’d named Project Icarus. They allege that a former Air Canada captain named in the coverage as Geoffrey Wall, now retired captained more than 900 domestic and international flights between 2009 and 2025 without holding the licence Canadian rules require for the job.

He’s facing seven criminal charges, including fraud, forgery and public mischief. Transport Canada has also levied a monetary penalty.

I’m going to keep using the word allegedly, because that’s what these are: allegations. Nothing here has been proven in court, and a charge is not a conviction. But the documented facts of the licensing gap are not really in dispute even Air Canada has acknowledged it.

So let’s talk about what that gap actually is. Because “without a licence” is doing an enormous amount of work in that headline, and it does not mean what you think.

“Without a licence” doesn’t mean what you think

There isn’t one pilot’s licence. There’s a ladder of them.

To fly passengers for an airline, you build up through a series of certifications, each one a higher bar than the last. The big two that matter here:

• A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) — this lets you fly professionally and get paid for it. It takes serious training, exams, and a flight test.

• An Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) — the top rung. In Canada, this is the licence a captain of a large airline aircraft is required to hold. You earn it mainly by clearing a battery of additional written exams — air law, meteorology, navigation, flight planning — on top of an experience requirement of well over a thousand hours.

Here’s the crux of the case. Police and Air Canada both say the accused held a valid Commercial Pilot Licence and was fully trained. What he allegedly lacked was the ATPL — the captain-level credential. The alleged crime isn’t that an untrained stranger wandered into the cockpit. It’s that the paperwork certifying he’d cleared that top rung was, police allege, fraudulent.

That’s a meaningful difference. “Unqualified to fly” and “missing a specific certification while demonstrably able to fly” are not the same sentence even though the headline blurs them into one.

The part that should reassure you

Now the most reassuring part of this whole story, the one almost no headline will mention.

In Canada, an airline pilot’s competence isn’t checked once, at licensing, and then trusted forever. It’s checked relentlessly, for your entire flying career.

Every six months, I’m back in a simulator being put through my worst day, engine failures, fires, failures stacked on failures and graded on it. Every twelve months, a certified check pilot rides in the cockpit on a real flight and watches everything I do. Air Canada has confirmed its pilots go through exactly this: recurrent training every six months, plus an annual flight check with a Transport Canada check pilot.

By the airline’s own account, this captain was repeatedly tested in the simulator and in the actual aircraft and met or exceeded the standard, year after year.

I’ve sat through dozens of these checks. I can tell you there is no faking your way through them. A check pilot watching you fly an approach in a crosswind, or handle an engine failure at the worst possible moment, sees through anything in about ninety seconds. Whatever the paperwork said, the flying was independently graded by the regulator over and over again.

So when the headline implies that 900 flights’ worth of passengers were at the mercy of someone who couldn’t do the job — the evidence we have points the other way. The flying was watched. Closely. The whole time.

These are the layers that were quietly protecting you on every one of those flights:

1. A fully qualified first officer in the other seat, trained to take over instantly.

2. Standard operating procedures that mean any two qualified pilots can fly together safely, even as strangers.

3. Recurrent simulator checks every six months, grading each pilot on emergencies you’ll thankfully never see.

4. An annual line check with a regulator’s check pilot riding along on a real flight.

5. The aircraft itself built with layers of redundancy so that no single point, human or mechanical, is the only thing keeping you in the air.

A licence is one layer. This story is about that one layer being allegedly faked. Every other layer was doing its job.

So if he could clearly fly the plane, why does the missing licence matter at all?

That’s the part worth paying attention to. And it’s where this story stops being reassuring and starts being important.

The five layers above are the whole reassurance and they’re real. But knowing he could fly the plane and understanding why the missing licence still matters are two very different things.

You’re in seat 24C, three hours into the flight, somewhere over the ocean.

The cabin lights are dim. The person next to you is asleep. You glance up at the little compartment above your head, the one you’ve never seen open and you think, just for a second:

what would it actually feel like if those masks dropped right now?

You’ve seen the safety video a hundred times. You know “put yours on before helping others.” You know it means breathe normally.

You also know, somewhere in the back of your mind, that the safety video doesn’t tell you what comes before the mask. Or after. Or what the pilots are doing in the 30 seconds you’d be fumbling with the elastic.

Up at 35,000 feet, we know that feeling too, not as passengers, but as the pilots who train for this scenario more than almost anything else in the simulator.

What most passengers get wrong about that yellow mask

Most people think the scary part of cabin pressure is the moment the mask falls from the ceiling.

I’ll tell you what’s actually scary if you’re a pilot: the version where the mask doesn’t fall because the cabin never gave anyone a warning loud enough to react to.

The cabin pressurization system is one of the most reliable systems on the aircraft. So reliable that most passengers fly thousands of hours over a lifetime and never give it a thought.

That reliability is also why, when something does go wrong, the second-most-feared cabin event for nervous flyers becomes the one almost nobody understands.

Here’s the truth your safety card doesn’t have room for: those yellow masks aren’t a parachute.

They’re a clock.

And once you understand the clock, you understand the entire procedure including why the pilots’ first job isn’t to comfort you.

It’s to dive.

Even if we fail, the airplane doesn’t

Most modern private jets and the Airbus A350 are equipped with a system called Automatic Emergency Descent — AED for short or ADM (Automatic Descent Mode)

If the cabin altitude crosses a critical threshold and the pilots don’t react within seconds — because they’re already hypoxic, incapacitated, or simply too slow — the autopilot and autothrottle take over. The airplane disconnects from its cruise route, banks roughly 90 degrees off the airway to clear traffic below, pulls the throttles to idle, deploys the speed brakes, and dives toward 10,000 feet on its own.

No pilot input required.

On every other airliner — which is still the majority of the fleet flying today — the pilots execute the exact same maneuver themselves. And that is precisely what we train, in a full-motion simulator, every six months.

It was engineered into the airplane for one reason: because hypoxia takes away the judgment to recognize hypoxia, the system can no longer assume a human will catch it in time. So the system catches itself.

This is the second clock you didn’t know was running. The first is the oxygen in the yellow mask. The second is the airplane itself already programmed to do what your body would be trying to do, if it could.

What we actually train for and what “emergency descent” really means

Every six months, I sit in a full-motion simulator for a recurrent training session. Cabin decompression is on the syllabus almost every single time — right alongside engine failure on takeoff, fire warning at altitude, and a rejected takeoff at decision speed. It is, statistically, one of the four scenarios airline pilots rehearse more than any other.

This is not a “we covered it once” kind of training. This is a “we run it until our hands move before our brain does” kind of training.

So when you hear the phrase emergency descent, here’s what’s actually happening in the cockpit:

Masks on, within two seconds. Both pilots reach for their quick-don oxygen masks the moment the cue is recognized. Mask first. Communicate second. The cockpit oxygen system is independent of the cabin’s — stored at high pressure, lasts far longer, and is the reason the pilots can keep flying the airplane while you breathe through your yellow one.

Autopilot stays engaged. Modern philosophy is to let the automation do the precision work while the humans manage the procedure. We don’t disconnect to “fly it manually” because we’re brave. We let the autopilot fly because it doesn’t get hypoxic.

90-degree turn off the airway. Other traffic is below us; we need to get out of their cruising level before we descend through it. The turn is automatic on aircraft equipped with ADM, manually flown on those that aren’t.

Throttles to idle. Speed brakes out. Nose down. The airplane is now in a high-speed descent at, or just below, its maximum operating speed (Vmo/Mmo) typically 4,000 to 6,000 feet per minute, roughly the descent rate of a fast express elevator.

Level off at 10,000 feet or the minimum safe altitude over terrain, whichever is higher. Below 10,000, the air outside is breathable on its own. The clock stops there.

The whole sequence, from chime to level-off, is usually complete in 3 to 5 minutes.

From the cabin, it feels like the plane is falling. From the cockpit, it feels like the airplane is running the same checklist we’ve run forty times in the simulator — because it is.

The quietest decompression is the deadliest

Pilots are trained for three kinds of cabin pressure loss, each with a different time signature:

The danger isn’t the pressure differential. It’s the hypoxia.

Hypoxia doesn’t feel like suffocation. It feels like being fine. Mild euphoria. Slightly slurred speech. A little tunnel vision. The judgment to recognize what’s happening is one of the first things hypoxia takes away.

The textbook example is Helios Airways Flight 522. August 2005. A Boeing 737-300 climbed out of Larnaca with its pressurization controller left in MANUAL after maintenance the night before. The cockpit warning sounded and the already-hypoxic crew misread it as a different alarm. The passenger masks dropped automatically. The system worked. The people didn’t.

The aircraft flew its programmed route alone for over two hours before fuel exhaustion. 121 souls lost. No mechanical failure only a missed switch, a confusing alarm, and a kind of decompression that doesn’t announce itself.

Helios is the reason almost every modern airliner and corporate jet manufactured since has been engineered with Automatic Descent Mode. The same chain of events on a 2026 aircraft ends with the autopilot saving everyone before hypoxia ever finishes its work.

You don’t gamble with the quiet kind and the engineers, after Helios, made sure the airplane wouldn’t either.

You’re sitting at the kitchen table at 11 p.m.

The job offer is on the screen. More money. Different city. A boss you’ve never met. Your partner is asleep upstairs. You’ve read the email forty times, and somehow each time it gets less clear, not more.

You want someone to just tell you what to do.

Up at 35,000 feet, we know that feeling.

A warning light flashes. The weather ahead has changed. A passenger needs medical attention. Two hundred people are sitting behind us — most of them watching a movie, completely unaware and we have minutes, sometimes seconds, to choose.

Here’s what most people get wrong about pilots: they assume we’re calmer because we’re braver. Or smarter. Or wired differently.

We’re not.

We’re calmer because we’re following a system. And the good news is — you can borrow it.

The Cockpit Reality

Forget what you’ve seen in movies.

When something goes wrong at 35,000 feet, the cockpit doesn’t get louder — it gets quieter. The first words out of a captain’s mouth aren’t a command. They’re almost always the same four:

“Okay. Let’s slow this down.”

Not because we’re calmer than you. Because we’ve been trained to follow a system before we follow a feeling.

Here’s a small example. A few years ago, flying into a European airport at night, we got a thunderstorm cell sitting right on the approach path. Tower was vectoring everyone around it. Our fuel was fine, but not infinite. The first officer looked at me. I looked at the radar. And before we did anything else, I said the line every pilot says in moments like this:

Fly the plane first. Figure out where to go second. Talk about it third.

That order matters. Most bad decisions in life and in cockpits happen because someone reverses it. They start communicating (panicking, asking everyone for advice, doom-scrolling) before they’ve stabilized the basics.

So here’s the framework. Five steps. Use it next time life gets loud.

The Pilot Decision Framework

Step 1: Slow the situation down

In the cockpit, the first move when something goes wrong isn’t to act. It’s to create time.

We climb to a safer altitude. We level off. We put the autopilot on. We give ourselves a stable platform to think from.

Pilots have a phrase for this: wind the clock. It comes from the old days when, before doing anything else in an emergency, you’d literally wind the cockpit clock. The point wasn’t the clock. The point was: do one small, deliberate thing before you do anything big.

You can use this immediately. Before responding to the email, the offer, the argument, the news do one small deliberate thing. Make tea. Walk around the block. Sleep on it. You’re not avoiding the decision. You’re stabilizing the platform you’re going to make it from.

Step 2: Define the real problem

Here’s where most people get stuck — and where most cockpit errors happen too.

The emotional problem is rarely the actual problem.

When that warning light flashes, the emotional problem is “something is wrong and people could die.” The actual problem might be “a faulty sensor is sending a bad signal.” Those are very different problems. They have very different solutions.

In real life: The emotional problem is “I have to decide whether to take this job.” The actual problem might be “I don’t know what I want my life to look like in five years, and this offer is forcing me to figure it out.” Those are also very different problems.

Ask yourself: What am I actually trying to solve here? Write it in one sentence. If you can’t, you’re not ready to decide yet — you’re ready to think.

Step 3: Gather only what matters

In the cockpit, we have access to roughly a thousand pieces of information at any given moment. Engine temperatures. Fuel flow. Wind speeds. Navigation data. Traffic. Weather. Cabin pressure. ATC chatter.

If we tried to process all of it, we’d freeze.

So we filter. Hard. We ask one question: What information do I need to make THIS decision, right now?

Everything else gets ignored. Not forever — just for now.

You can use this immediately. When you’re stuck on a decision, write down the three pieces of information that actually matter. Not the ten things you’re worried about. The three things that would change your answer.

If you can’t think of three — you probably already know your answer.

Step 4: Choose a safe, good-enough option

This one is the hardest for high-achievers to swallow.

Pilots are not trying to make the perfect decision. We’re trying to make a safe, sensible one quickly and then move on.

There’s a concept in aviation called the 80% rule. If you have 80% of the information and 80% confidence in your choice, decide. The last 20% almost never arrives in time, and waiting for it is itself a decision — usually a worse one.

In life, “perfect” is the enemy of “decided.” Most of the regret I hear from people isn’t about choosing wrong. It’s about not choosing at all, and watching the option expire.

Step 5: Commit and adapt

Here’s the part Hollywood gets right.

Once a pilot makes a decision to divert, to return, to continue we commit. We don’t keep relitigating it every two minutes. We execute, and we monitor.

But and this is critical committing is not the same as being stubborn. As new information arrives, we adjust. A diverted flight might re-divert if conditions change. We’re not married to the decision. We’re married to the outcome: getting everyone on the ground safely.

Decide. Monitor. Adjust. That’s the loop. Most people get it wrong by either flip-flopping (never committing) or doubling down (never adjusting). Neither one flies.

Pilots aren’t better decision-makers because they’re smarter. They’re better because they use systems when their emotions would rather not.

On Monday, Bloomberg broke the story. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has been pitching the idea of merging with American Airlines to the White House.

Not to a boardroom. Not to shareholders. To government officials, reportedly during a meeting at the White House in late February that was originally scheduled to discuss the future of Dulles Airport.

Kirby apparently raised the merger idea at the tail end of that agenda.

Let that sink in for a second.

If this deal ever goes through, United and American combined would become the largest airline on the planet. We’re talking about two carriers that together control more than a third of the entire U.S. domestic market. A combined fleet that would dwarf anything else flying today. Hubs at O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Newark, Denver, Charlotte, LAX, Miami, Houston, Washington Dulles basically, everywhere.

And I’ll tell you this: the conversation around this merger is already wrong.

Pundits are talking about stock prices. Analysts are arguing about antitrust law. Cable news is debating politics.

Nobody is asking the question that actually matters to you:

What does this mean for the person sitting in seat 14C?

That’s what I’m going to break down today. Because I’ve lived through airline mergers from the cockpit. I’ve seen what they do to operations, to crews, to the flight you’re about to board. And there are things happening behind the scenes right now that most people don’t understand.

N-171D Boeing B-767-300ER

She was built during the George H.W. Bush administration.

She took her first breath of sky on April 22, 1990 — a test flight out of Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington. Six weeks later, she was delivered to Delta Air Lines, registration N171DN, and she never wore another airline’s name for the rest of her life.

On April 9, 2026, she flew her final revenue flight — Delta 715 from San Francisco to Atlanta. The next morning, she ferried quietly to Birmingham, Alabama, where she’ll be taken apart, piece by piece.

No fanfare. No water cannon salute. Just one last flight to the scrapper.

That’s a pilot’s airplane. She didn’t need a ceremony. Her logbook spoke for itself.

BY THE NUMBERS

Here’s what 36 years of flying looks like.

Over 150,000 flight hours. Think about that for a second. That’s more than 17 years of continuous, non-stop flight without ever touching the ground. It’s roughly 6,250 days in the air.

She crossed every ocean Delta flies. She connected Atlanta to Europe, to Asia, to Latin America. In her younger years, she was an international workhorse — the kind of airplane that made Delta a global airline. In her later years, she settled into transcontinental routes: ATL to SFO, ATL to JFK, ATL to Phoenix. Still earning her keep. Still carrying passengers. Still running.

The only time she stopped was during COVID. From January 2020 to April 2021, she sat in storage — like most of the world’s fleet. Then she came back and flew for five more years.

Even in her final weeks, she wasn’t parked in a hangar waiting for a retirement party. She was flying real routes, carrying real passengers, generating real revenue. Delta was squeezing every last ounce of value out of this airplane right up to the end. That tells you something about how good she was.

THE AIRPLANE THAT CHANGED THE RULES

This is where it gets fascinating and where this story becomes bigger than one airplane.

Before the 767, there was a hard rule in aviation: twin-engine airplanes could not fly more than 60 minutes from a suitable diversion airport. That meant if you wanted to cross an ocean, you needed three or four engines. Period. The 747. The L-1011 TriStar. The DC-10. Those were your only options.

The thinking was simple. If you lose an engine over the middle of the Atlantic on a twin-engine jet, you’d better be close to land.

In 1980, when Boeing approached the FAA about flying the 767 on long overwater routes, the FAA administrator’s response was blunt. He said he wouldn’t allow twin-engine jets to fly long-haul overwater routes — and he didn’t mean for just a year or two.

But Boeing had the data. The 767’s engines were achieving reliability numbers no previous powerplant had ever matched. The airplane itself had built-in redundancy that made it fundamentally different from anything that came before — dual hydraulic systems, advanced avionics, and an Engine-Indicating and Crew-Alerting System (EICAS) that gave pilots real-time engine health data we’d never had access to before.

In 1985, TWA flew the first ETOPS revenue flight: a 767 from Boston to Paris under a brand-new 120-minute rule. The airplane burned thousands of pounds less fuel than the L-1011 TriStar it replaced on that same route.

By 1991, more passengers were crossing the Atlantic in 767s than in three- and four-engine jets combined.

By 2000, half of all transatlantic crossings were made by 767s.

The 767 didn’t just fly the routes — it invented them. It proved that two engines, proper engineering, and rigorous maintenance were enough to cross any ocean on Earth. Every twin-engine jet you fly on today — the 787, the A350, the 777 — exists because the 767 proved it could be done.

So when you hear that N171DN has been retired, understand what you’re really hearing. You’re hearing the final chapter for one of the airplanes that changed the fundamental rules of how we fly.

A passenger in first class, half-joking as they sip their drink, leans toward a flight attendant and says: “So… are the pilots actually up there, or did the computer take over?”

Everyone laughs. But the question is serious and the assumption behind it is one of the most common misconceptions in all of aviation.

Climb to cruise altitude. Press a button. Put the plane on autopilot. Coffee. Crossword puzzle. Maybe a quick nap. Wake up 8 hours later for descent.

“The computer’s flying. The pilots are just there in case something goes wrong.”

I understand where this comes from. Aviation movies. News reports. A general sense that modern aircraft are so sophisticated they practically fly themselves.

And on the surface? It looks that way. Cruising at 37,000 feet, the aircraft is smooth, stable, and seemingly serene.

But here’s what you don’t see.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING

The moment autopilot engages — typically a few minutes after takeoff — it doesn’t mean we stop flying the aircraft. It means we change how we’re flying it.

Think of autopilot like cruise control in a car. You’ve set your speed, but you’re still steering, watching the road, anticipating the curve ahead, ready to brake if something unexpected happens. You haven’t handed the wheel to the car and gone to sleep.

Now multiply that by a hundred. Add weather systems across three time zones. Air traffic control instructions every few minutes. Fuel calculations updating in real time. Contingency planning for airports you might never visit.

That’s closer to what we’re doing.

On a long-haul flight, my co-pilot and I will monitor dozens of systems, receive multiple re-routes, cross-check fuel burns against our flight plan, and brief for alternate procedures — all while the autopilot holds our altitude to within 10 feet.

But here’s where it gets genuinely interesting — and this is the part most passengers never hear about.

The autopilot isn’t making decisions. We are. Every input it follows comes from us. Every constraint it works within, we set. Every change in route, altitude, or speed — that’s the pilots talking to the aircraft through a system called the Flight Management Computer.

And managing that system, while simultaneously monitoring engine performance, weather radar, hydraulic pressures, fuel balance, cabin altitude, and a hundred other parameters…

That’s a full-time job. That’s our full-time job.

What I’m about to share inside the paid section is something most people never get to see: a real breakdown of what a typical cruise phase looks like from the left seat — the decisions being made, the systems being watched, and the one thing that happens on almost every long-haul flight that would surprise even the most frequent flyer.

Let me paint you a picture.

You’re in seat 27F. The seatbelt sign just came on. The cabin goes quiet except for the rattle of overhead bins and the nervous cough of the guy across the aisle. Your coffee is doing a little dance in its cup. Your knuckles are white on the armrest.

Now let me tell you what’s happening thirty metres ahead of you, behind the locked door.

I’m sipping my coffee.

Seriously. That’s it. Maybe I’ve turned the seatbelt sign on, adjusted our altitude by a thousand feet, and gone back to my cup of Yorkshire Tea. My heart rate hasn’t changed. My copilot and I might be mid-conversation about where we’re eating on the layover.

That disconnect between what turbulence feels like in the cabin and what it looks like from the flight deck is one of the most misunderstood things in all of aviation. And after thousands of hours in the cockpit, I think it’s time I walked you through it properly.

The dirty secret about turbulence

Here’s something most pilots won’t say out loud in polite company: turbulence is, almost always, a non-event for us.

Not because we’re brave. Not because we’ve been desensitised. But because we understand what’s actually happening and what isn’t.

Turbulence is just the aircraft moving through uneven air. That’s it. The plane isn’t falling. It isn’t breaking. It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do: flex, absorb, and keep flying. Modern airliners are tested to withstand forces far beyond anything you’ll encounter on a commercial flight. The wings on a Boeing 787 can flex upward by nearly 8 metres before they’d be in trouble. You’ll never get close to that number in normal operations. Not even in the bumpy stuff that makes passengers gasp.

What you feel as violent jolts are usually altitude changes of 10 to 30 feet. Sometimes less. Your lift going from the ground floor to the first floor is a bigger movement. But because you can’t see the horizon, because you’re strapped into a metal tube with no frame of reference, your brain interprets it as danger. That’s not a flaw in you — it’s a flaw in the environment. You’re a perfectly rational human being having a perfectly irrational experience.

What we actually see (and don’t see)

Here’s where it gets interesting for the avgeeks.

From the cockpit, turbulence is largely invisible. You can’t see it. There’s no dark cloud with a warning label. No visible wall of “rough air” approaching. Most of the time, we know it’s coming because other aircraft have reported it ahead of us, or because our weather radar is showing precipitation returns that suggest convective activity.

But here’s the thing clear air turbulence (CAT) doesn’t show on radar at all. It’s associated with jet streams and atmospheric shear, not moisture. So it’s genuinely invisible. We rely entirely on pilot reports (PIREPs), dispatcher information, and increasingly sophisticated atmospheric models to anticipate it.

When we do hit it, here’s the cockpit reality:

The autopilot stays engaged. It’s managing the ride far more smoothly than a human could. We might ask ATC for a different altitude “Centre, requesting flight level three-seven-zero for smoother ride conditions” is a sentence I’ve said hundreds of times. We’ll check in with the cabin crew to make sure they’re safe. And we turn the seatbelt sign on and we genuinely want you to listen to it.

That last point matters. More on that in a moment.

The five types of turbulence (and what each one means)

If you really want to understand turbulence like a pilot, you need to know the categories. We report them using a standardised scale, and each one tells a very different story.

Light turbulence — Slight, erratic changes in altitude or attitude. Your drink might ripple. Cabin crew continue service. From the cockpit: barely worth mentioning. I might not even turn the seatbelt sign on.

Light to moderate — A bit more persistent. You feel it in your seat. Unsecured objects might shift. Cabin crew might pause the drinks cart. From the cockpit: a mental note, maybe a PIREP to help the aircraft behind us.

Moderate turbulence — Now we’re paying attention. Definite strain against your seatbelt. Walking is difficult. Cabin service is suspended. From the cockpit: the autopilot is working harder, we’re likely requesting a new altitude, and we’re keeping a closer eye on the weather picture. But the aircraft is still well within its limits.

Severe turbulence — Rare. Genuinely rare. Occupants are forced violently against their seatbelts. Unsecured objects are thrown around the cabin. From the cockpit: we’re fully focused, coordinating with ATC, possibly deviating off course. But even here, the aircraft is designed for this. The structure can handle it. It’s the unrestrained humans inside that are at risk.

Extreme turbulence — Almost never encountered in commercial aviation. The aircraft is practically uncontrollable momentarily. This is what causes the dramatic headlines, but most career airline pilots will never experience it. I never have.

The important pattern to notice: the danger isn’t to the aircraft. It’s to the people inside it who aren’t wearing their seatbelts. The aircraft doesn’t care about turbulence. You need to care about your seatbelt.

An insider’s confession: the seatbelt sign politics

Here’s something passengers don’t know. The seatbelt sign is a surprisingly political decision.

Turn it on too early and leave it on too long? Passengers ignore it. Cabin crew can’t do their service. The airline gets complaints. Turn it off too soon? Someone gets hurt and it’s a legal issue.

Every captain manages it differently. Some are conservative — sign on the moment there’s a whisper of bumps. Others wait until it’s clearly needed. Neither approach is wrong, but it creates an inconsistency that confuses passengers. You might fly one leg with the sign on for two hours and the next with it barely flickering.

My personal philosophy? I’d rather have it on ten minutes too early than ten seconds too late. Because the injuries that happen in turbulence and they do happen are almost exclusively to people who weren’t buckled up. Flight attendants reaching for overhead bins. Passengers walking to the lavatory. People who thought the bumps were over.

The single best piece of advice I can give any flyer: keep your seatbelt loosely fastened whenever you’re seated.

Always. Even when the sign is off. It costs you nothing and it could save you from a serious injury. A quick reminder most passengers don’t realize:

What the instruments tell us

For the technically curious: when turbulence hits, here’s what’s happening on my flight deck displays.

The primary flight display (PFD) shows small, rapid deviations in pitch and altitude. In moderate turbulence, you might see the altitude bouncing around by 50 to 100 feet. The airspeed might fluctuate by 10 to 15 knots. These are numbers that look alarming on paper but are well within normal parameters.

The autopilot is constantly correcting making micro-adjustments to the control surfaces dozens of times per second. It’s doing a far better job than I would manually. In fact, in most turbulence, the worst thing a pilot could do is disconnect the autopilot and try to hand-fly. The automation smooths the ride. We let it work.

On the navigation display, if the turbulence is associated with weather, we’re painting it with our onboard radar. You’ll see returns in green, yellow, and red — with red and magenta being areas of heavy precipitation that we’ll deviate around, sometimes by 20 or 30 miles. We never fly through red returns if we can avoid it. That’s a hard rule.

“But what about that flight that dropped 1,000 feet?”

You’ve seen the headlines. “Plane drops 1,000 feet in seconds.” “Passengers thrown to ceiling.” “Flight from hell.”

Let me decode those for you.

First, the reported altitude drops are almost always exaggerated. What gets reported as “1,000 feet” was probably 100 to 200 feet. Human perception in an enclosed space without visual references is wildly unreliable. It feels like freefall. It isn’t.

Second, the injuries in those events and this is critical are almost always to unrestrained passengers and cabin crew. The aircraft lands safely. Every time. The structure is intact. The engines are fine. The wings didn’t come off. People got hurt because they weren’t strapped in.

Third, those events make the news precisely because they’re rare. You don’t see headlines about the tens of thousands of flights every single day that experience turbulence and land without incident. Because that’s not a story. That’s just Tuesday.

The future of turbulence forecasting

This one’s for the avgeeks and frequent flyers.

The industry is getting dramatically better at predicting and avoiding turbulence. LIDAR-based detection systems are in development that can sense clear air turbulence minutes before an aircraft encounters it — something radar can’t do. Airlines are sharing real-time turbulence data across fleets, creating a constantly updating map of atmospheric conditions.

Some newer aircraft have gust-load alleviation systems that actively sense turbulence and move the control surfaces to counteract it before you feel it. The ride on a modern widebody is already noticeably smoother than aircraft from twenty years ago.

And atmospheric modelling is improving every year. The forecasts I get in my pre-flight briefing pack are significantly more accurate than what we had even a decade ago. We know, within reasonable probability, where the rough air is and what altitude will give us the smoothest ride.

Turbulence isn’t going away if anything, some research suggests it may increase with climate change as jet stream patterns shift. But our ability to predict it, avoid it, and manage it when we can’t avoid it is better than it’s ever been.

So what do I want you to take away from this?

Three things.

One: Turbulence feels far worse than it is. The gap between passenger perception and cockpit reality is enormous. What terrifies you in the cabin is routine for us up front. That’s not dismissive, it’s reassuring.

Two: The aircraft can handle it. Full stop. These machines are over-engineered to an extraordinary degree. The wings flex because they’re designed to flex. The fuselage creaks because it’s built to move. Everything you hear and feel in turbulence is the aircraft doing its job exactly as intended.

Three: Wear your seatbelt. Always. The only real risk in turbulence is to unsecured humans. Be a secured human. It’s the simplest thing you can do to make turbulence a complete non-issue.

Next time you hit a bumpy patch at 37,000 feet, I want you to picture the cockpit. Two pilots, calm and composed. Autopilot doing its thing. A cup of coffee on the centre console. Maybe a conversation about the hotel restaurant.

You feel it the moment the wheels touch. That jarring thud, the sudden deceleration, the overhead bins rattling. You grip the armrest and think:

Did something go wrong?

I’ve had passengers turn to me after a wet-weather landing and ask, half-joking: “Is the pilot okay up there?” I always smile. Because the answer is yes — and so are you. In fact, that hard landing you just experienced might have been one of the safest things that happened to you all day.

Let me explain what’s actually going on.

First, Let’s Talk About Water and Rubber

When a runway is wet, a thin film of water builds up between the tire and the pavement just like it does under your car on the highway. The technical term is hydroplaning, and it’s exactly as dangerous as it sounds.

A commercial aircraft lands at around 150–180 mph. At that speed, with water on the runway, tires can lose contact with the surface entirely. When that happens, braking becomes almost useless. We’re essentially sliding on a cushion of water with 80 tons of metal behind us.

To cut through that water film and get rubber actually touching tarmac, we need to do one thing: get the weight of the aircraft onto the wheels as fast as possible.

And the way you do that? You land firmly.

The “Grease” Landing Is Not Always the Goal

Here’s something pilot training teaches early: a perfectly smooth, “greaser” landing is a great feeling but it’s not the universal gold standard people think it is.

On a dry runway, a smooth landing is lovely. On a wet or contaminated runway, a pilot who floats the aircraft trying to achieve that perfect touchdown is actually creating a hazard. Every second spent floating above the runway in a flare is a second your brakes, spoilers, and thrust reversers aren’t working. That’s runway disappearing behind you.

We are trained explicitly to put the plane down firmly when conditions call for it. It’s not a mistake. It’s the plan.

What Happens in the Cockpit When It’s Raining

Before we even begin the approach, there’s a whole checklist running through our heads (and literally, on paper). We consult the Runway Condition Assessment Matrix the RCAM which gives us a standardized runway condition code based on surface contamination. We get braking action reports: Good, Medium, Poor, or Nil.

“Nil” braking action, by the way, means the runway is essentially ice. That’s when we divert.

For anything in between, we calculate our landing distance with a wet runway factor applied. This gives us a number: the minimum runway length we need to stop safely. We compare that to what’s available. If there’s enough margin, we continue. If not, we go somewhere else simple as that.

Then, on final approach, we aim for the threshold with more precision than you might imagine. Our target zone is a specific 1,000-foot stripe of paint at the start of the runway and we want to be on it, not floating past it.

The Three Weapons We Use to Stop

Once we’re down, stopping a heavy jet on a wet runway is a coordinated attack on physics. We have three tools, and we deploy all of them simultaneously:

1. Spoilers. Those panels that pop up from the wings the moment we touch down. They “spoil” the lift the wings are still generating, which pushes the aircraft weight down onto the wheels faster — again, better braking contact.

2. Thrust reversers. The engine nacelles open and redirect thrust forward. You’ll hear that loud roaring sound and feel the deceleration. This is normal. This is good.

3. Autobrakes. Set before landing, these apply a preset level of braking automatically and consistently — often more effectively than a human foot can manage. On wet runways, we typically select a higher autobrake setting.

All three engage within the first two seconds of touchdown. The aircraft does a lot of the work itself. Our job is to make sure it can.

Side Note: It’s Not Just Rain — Short Runways Too

A firm touchdown is not only about rain. On short runways, every meter counts — floating even a few seconds too long can burn through hundreds of feet you simply do not have. A few airports where a firm, purposeful landing is always the plan:

London City (EGLC): Only 1,508m of runway, a steep 5.5-degree approach, and buildings at both ends. No room for a gentle float.

Innsbruck (LOWI): 2,000m nestled in the Alps. Terrain on all sides means you fly a precise, stabilised approach and plant it.

Queenstown, New Zealand (NZQN): 1,800m between mountains and a lake. Firm, on-speed, on-target every time.

If you have ever landed at one of these and felt that confident thud — now you know exactly why.

So What Does a Dangerous Landing Actually Look Like?

Not what you think.

A dangerous landing in the rain looks like this: a long float above the runway while the pilot hunts for smoothness, touching down too far past the threshold with not enough runway remaining to stop. That’s the scenario training is designed to prevent.

The hard, assertive touchdown? That’s us being precise. That’s the training working exactly as intended.

You’ll notice that after a firm rain landing, the plane stops with runway to spare. That’s not coincidence.

Next Time It Rains...

When you feel that firm touchdown on a rainy day, resist the urge to wince. Instead, take a breath and notice what happens in the next 20 seconds: the roar of the reversers, the press of the brakes against your body, the aircraft slowing confidently and controllably.

That sequence — all of it, including the firm initial contact — is exactly what’s supposed to happen. It was briefed, calculated, and executed on purpose.

You’re not in the hands of a pilot who botched the landing.

You’re in the hands of one who knew exactly what they were doing.

One more thing. I get a lot of replies from nervous flyers after posts like this one. The landing is fine, they say but it’s the turbulence that still gets them. That’s actually why I put together a full guide on it.

Lessons from the Flight Deck

You’re at the gate. Boarding is about to start.

Your flight appears on the departure board. The aircraft is parked at the jet bridge. The crew has arrived. Everything looks ready.

But in the cockpit, a decision hasn’t been made yet.

We’re running numbers.

Three specific calculations. Three hard limits. Three numbers that must all be green before we ever push back from that gate.

If even one is wrong if even one crosses into the red zone by a single digit, the flight doesn’t go. Not delayed. Not “we’ll figure it out.”

❌ We don’t go.

This is the go/no-go decision. And it happens on every single flight you’ve ever taken.

Here’s what we’re actually calculating while you’re boarding.

👀 The Moment Passengers Never See

You: Settling into your seat. Checking that your bag fits overhead. Turning on airplane mode.

Us: Staring at three numbers on a screen. Running calculations that will determine whether this flight leaves the ground at all.

Most passengers never know this moment exists.

You assume the flight is happening. The gate agent called your boarding group. The crew walked past you down the jet bridge. The flight attendants are closing overhead bins.

But until these three numbers are verified until every calculation checks out and every limit is satisfied, nothing is guaranteed.

The three numbers:

1️⃣ Maximum Takeoff Weight

2️⃣ Landing Distance Required

3️⃣ Minimum Fuel

If any one of these numbers is wrong, we don’t go.

Let me show you why.

Number 1: Maximum Takeoff Weight

What it is: The maximum weight at which this specific aircraft, on this specific runway, in these specific conditions, can safely take off.

Why it matters: Physics doesn’t negotiate.

Every aircraft has an absolute maximum structural weight limit. But that’s not the number we use. The actual takeoff weight limit is always lower and it changes based on:

• Runway length available

• Runway slope (uphill vs downhill)

• Temperature (hot air = less lift)

• Pressure altitude (high elevation = thin air)

• Wind (headwind helps, tailwind hurts)

• Runway condition (dry, wet, contaminated)

How we calculate it:

We input all the variables runway length, temperature, wind, altitude into the flight management computer. It tells us the maximum weight we can safely take off at.

That weight includes everything:

• The empty aircraft itself

• Every passenger (with a standard weight assigned)

• Every checked bag

• All cargo

• Every gallon of fuel

• Catering, supplies, everything on board

We add it all up.

Here’s what passengers don’t realize:

Everything is weighed. Your bags at check-in. The cargo going underneath. Even passengers are assigned standard weights (which vary by season, route, and whether it’s domestic or international).

We don’t guess. We know the exact weight of everything on board.

If the total exceeds the maximum for today’s conditions, we have to fix it before we go:

1. Reduce fuel (if we have extra beyond our minimums this is the first option)

2. Offload bags or cargo (more common than passengers realize)

3. Offload passengers (absolute last resort, extremely rare)

The number must be green. ✅

Even 50 pounds over? We don’t go until it’s fixed.

No exceptions. No “close enough.” The physics of flight doesn’t negotiate.

I spent a significant part of my pilot training flying in Florida while working toward my licenses. Long days in small training aircraft, humid air, afternoon thunderstorms building over the coast, it was intense, challenging, and unforgettable. I used to think Miami was all about sandy white beaches and luxury shopping until my trip to Miami last year where I discovered there was more to Miami than that.

A trip to Miami gives you easy access to city exploration, walks through nature or swims with sea turtles. And if you love to take photos while you travel, you’ll find Miami offers you a great mix of colourful street scenes, modern architecture, nature and mouth watering food to photograph.

As an avid travel photographer, Miami was the perfect photographic playground to create some of my personal favourite travel photos.

These are 6 photo spots that you have to visit during a trip to Miami (including top tips for photography specific to these spots that aren’t just about camera and lens)!

1. Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park is just an hour away from Miami.

It’s been a national park since 1947 and is the third largest national park in terms of land size. The park protects a stunning 1.5 million acres of wetland, forest, marine areas, and native plants and animals—a park unlike anywhere else in the US.

It’s home to some unique wildlife like alligators and herons, and also unique landscapes.

Giving you plenty of photo opportunities to photograph and take home some unique photos of your trip.

Tips for shooting:

• Head into the park early or late in the day to avoid the harsh midday sun. Miami gets really hot. Plus the light is golden and softer during this time. Adding more warmth and flow to your photos, whether you’re taking wildlife or landscape shots.

• If you’re a big wildlife photographer, be sure to bring a telephoto lens (at least 200mm) to capture birds and wildlife up close.

• Consider taking an Tram Tour in Shark Valley to get an insider guided tour to learn more about the wetlands and wildlife that dwell in this reserve. It’s so much easier to spot wildlife and interesting fauna when an expert guide points them out to you.

• Depending on the season you visit, it can get really hot. The best time to visit is during Winter and early spring, when humidity is lower, skies are clearer, and wildlife activity peaks. The mornings and late afternoon air can be crisp and cool. And the middle of the day really heats up when the sun hits your skin. Layer up so you can easily and quickly add or remove layers. And be sun-smart with hats and sunscreen.

2. Miami Beach Art Deco District

The Art Deco District is Miami’s postcard face — pastel buildings with geometric lines, neon signs, and palm-lined sidewalks.

It’s what we think of when we think Miami.

As someone who loves urban and architectural photography, being able to play with shapes, colour, symmetry and different building styles is so fun.

Tips for shooting:

• The pastel blues, pinks, and yellows really pop against Miami’s bright skies. Make sure to make these colours the hero of your shots.

• Miami is a really congested and busy city. Getting out and about early in the morning before the bulk of the city wakes up and before the tourists flock to popular hot spots is key to capturing interesting photos without all the distraction of people and cars. A nice bonus is that early morning light meals the pastel colours glow softly in your photos too.

• When photographing buildings and architecture, pay attention to straight lines and symmetry. Unintentional crooked horizons or off-centre buildings can make photos look “off”.

• The Art Deco district is filled with people and a buzz of activity—roller skaters, cafe goers and shoppers. Don’t forget to capture the life of the area too in your travel photos.

• Miami Beach is right nearby so be sure to capture the vibrant beach life especially during or after sunset. Both golden hour and blue hour are great times to photograph people enjoying the beaches.

💡Bonus tip: Walk along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue for the most iconic facades. I captured and documented so many great travel scenes just by meandering through these streets without a specific goal in mind.

3. Little Havana

Little Havana is one of Miami’s most culturally rich neighborhoods.

The heart of Cuban-American culture.

Yes, it’s a little bit touristy. But it’s also filled with plenty of locals going about their days and just being in the community.

You’ll see small narrow shops, old men playing dominoes and so much tasteful, colourful graffiti and street art everywhere. You’ll really get to see a slice of Little Havana life walking the area.

We spent half a day in Little Havana and it was one of the most vibrant parts of Miami we visited.

Tips for shooting:

• There are a ton of street and people photography photo opportunities. Cigar rollers, domino players, and street vendors. Along with retro buildings, restaurant goers and colourful graffiti art everywhere.

• Be respectful when photographing people. I personally never had issues photographing people while walking the streets. And often people are so preoccupied with their own conversations and activities they don’t notice you anyway. But nonetheless, don’t photograph people in compromising situations and if someone doesn’t want to be photographed, just walk away.

• I like to use either a 35mm or 50mm prime lens for a natural, intimate, documentary-style look. Perfect for exploring urban streets and hubs like Little Havana.

• Just walk and wander streets, side streets and alleys for art murals that aren’t on the main tourist trail.

• Don’t just take photos of sweeping scenes. Look for and hone into interesting details. Like mosaic tile wall art pieces, old signage and close up of food you eat.

4. Wynwood

Wynwood is Miami’s outdoor art gallery. You’ll find murals and graffiti art every block and corner you turn.

There is a real sense of grit, street and art culture here. You’ll see it in the way locals dress and the types of shops in the area.

It’s home to a lot of restaurants, cafes, galleries, and creative spaces. It’s very fun to just walk around and see what hidden gems you find.

Tips for shooting:

• Visiting Wynwood Walls is a must even though it’s a paid, curated outdoor street art gallery. You come face to face with some of the most unique murals, art installations and unique graffiti art in your life.

• If you want to fully capture murals and wall art, use a winder angle lens like a 24mm or wider. Wide angle lenses can create a lot of image distortion, but it also creates a unique look that is a nice mix to add to your travel photo memories. Just don’t over do it!

• Change your angle — murals look different when shot from low to the ground or from above (if you can access a higher viewpoint).

• Like in Little Havana, there’s plenty of opportunity to photograph street scenes—people, buildings, street performers.

5. Miami Design District

I almost didn’t make it to Miami Design district during our trip since it was a bit further north. But I’m so glad we did.

If Wynwood and Little Havana are raw, colourful, grungy and culturally rich.

Miami Design District is the total opposite—clean, sleek and beautiful in a modern way.

This district is filled with high-end luxury brands and shops. So the buildings were unique, attention-seeking and showed off cutting-edge architectural design. Each building was just another store-front. But doubled as a work of art to be admired and even photographed.

Tips for shooting:

• We went on a Sunday and it was jammed packed with tourists and I presume some locals. So take the opportunity to do some street and people photography too. In this area you’ll see some very well dressed people roaming the streets, and moving in and out of luxury cars.

• Shops are in and of itself a piece of art. Appreciate the creativity that went into designing and building some of these shops. They make for excellent photo subjects. I actually saw a lot of photographers doing portrait and fashion shoots around the area.

• Look for shapes, texture, patterns, symmetry and lines. I found the Miami Design district gave me a lot of opportunity to create minimalistic compositions.

• Don’t forget to include people in your shots somewhere when you photograph buildings—it gives viewers a sense of scale, and adds human interest to the scene as well.

Don’t miss: The iconic art piece by Buckminster Fuller—the Fly’s Eye Dome — a retro-futuristic geodesic dome right in the middle of the Miami Design district.

6. Coconut Grove

Last but not least, Coconut Grove is a leafy, bohemian pocket of Miami that feels far removed from the bustling and traffic-jammed filled Miami.

I loved the outdoor cafes, independent boutiques, and the charming Books & Books store was really cool.

If you’re looking for a laid-back, Sunday-afternoon, creative vibe, then Coconut Grove is the place to be.

Tips for shooting:

• You can get some great shots of the cafe scenes mid-morning when cafes are waking up but not yet packed with crowds. Capture candid moments like friends laughing over brunch, people meandering the streets or browsing local shops.

• A prime lens like the 35mm or 50mm works great for street and people photograph here in Coconut Grove.

• With so many cafes and restaurants in the area, you’re bound to sit for a meal or grab a coffee. A big part of documenting your travels is also capturing what you ate and drank. A prime lens like the 35mm or 50mm works well for this.

• Photograph a mix of wider street scenes with close-up detail shots to have a complete picture of your travels.

Final Thoughts

Miami is more than beaches and nightlife.

If you love to take photos while you travel, there’s a ton of photo opportunities in Miami if you know where to look and explore. Every neighbourhood has its own personality and flare. You’ll come away with a unique set of travel photos based on your personal interests.

There’s the wildlife and landscapes of Everglades National Park.

To the elegant and high-end streets of Miami Design District. All the way to the colourful, artistic and grungy areas like Little Havana and Wynwood.

So pack your camera, extra batteries and a good pair of walking shoes, and just wander.

Let me start with a confession:

I love passengers.

For 27 years, I’ve watched people step onto my airplane…and within the first few minutes, I can usually predict how the flight will go.

Not because of the weather.
Not because of maintenance.

Because of behavior.

Most of it is harmless.

Some of it quietly makes every flight crew sigh.

And a few habits?
They create real operational problems at 35,000 feet.

After nearly three decades in the cockpit, here are 11 things passengers do that pilots rarely say out loud.

You’re the reason I have a career. But after 27 years of flying from regional routes in Midwest snowstorms to long-haul international trips, there are certain things I’ve watched people do thousands of times that make me quietly shake my head behind the cockpit door.

This isn’t about shaming anyone. Most of these habits come from not knowing how things actually work on an airplane. So consider this your friendly briefing from someone who’s spent more time in the sky than most people spend in their cars.

1. 👏 Clapping When the Plane Lands

I know, I know, this is a controversial one. But here’s the thing: landing a plane is literally my job. I’ve done it over 12,000 times. The applause, while well-intentioned, can actually be distracting during the most task-heavy phase of the flight. After touchdown, we are managing reverse thrust, braking, runway turnoff, ground control frequency changes, and checklists. The cockpit is not a quiet place in those moments.

✦ Do This Instead: If you want to show appreciation, a quick “thanks” or nod to the crew as you deplane means more than any round of applause. Better yet, send a short note to the airline.

2. 🚶 Standing Up the Instant the Seatbelt Sign Turns Off

The plane has barely stopped and thirty people are already hunched over in the aisle like they’re queuing for the last lifeboat on the Titanic. Here’s what you don’t see: the jet bridge isn’t connected yet. The door isn’t open. You’re going to stand in that pretzel position for 5–10 minutes while your carry-on presses against the overhead bin. Nobody is getting off this aircraft any faster because you’re vertical.

✦ Do This Instead: Stay seated until your row is actually next to deplane. Use those extra minutes to gather your things calmly, check under the seat, and avoid being the person who holds up the aisle fumbling for a jacket while 180 people wait behind you.

3. 🎧 Ignoring the Safety Briefing Completely

I get it—you’ve flown a hundred times and you know where the exits are. But here’s something most people don’t realize: every aircraft type has different exit configurations, different emergency procedures, and different brace positions. What you learned on one airplane does not apply to another. Our flight attendants aren’t performing a theatrical show for their own amusement. They’re giving you information that could save your life in the 90 seconds you’d have to evacuate

✦ Do This Instead: At a minimum, count the rows between you and the nearest two exits. If you can’t see, count seat backs by touch. That one piece of information has saved lives in smoke-filled cabins where visibility drops to zero.

In my career, I’ve had two genuine emergencies that required passenger preparedness. Both times, the passengers who responded fastest were the ones who had actually paid attention. The ones frozen in their seats? Almost always frequent flyers who assumed they already knew what to do.

The rest of this list includes the behaviors that create the most tension in the cabin and the ones that can cost airlines six figures in a single diversion.
